I said it kinda as a joke ,it's the 80's kind of racism in media where you're like "oh yeah the africans in their jungles with their sun dials"

I like these styles more than what anime became later on. In a weird way this style has made a come back in western animation; this sort of more simplistic art style.

 No.17594

You know there is something funny about a remaking a show in current japan, 40 years into a economic stagnation, about a show that was made when it was at its peak.

>>17569
no but watch the original in between weeks. the show itself is episodic. there's no real continuity or a story besides tidbits that build up towards the end.

 No.14744[Reply]

why is anime so comfy?

i love watching 2000s cheap anime with dubs on
i love the cheesy ness of it, it's very homely

The fact that the first recommendation in the thread wasn't Perfect Blue makes me disappointed in all of you.

thoughts on ghost stories
is it actually scary without the dub jokes?

 No.17544[Reply]

Recently I tried watching Teletubbies in Japanese, because that's how I learned English, so maybe I could learn Japanese with it too. However, the Japanese dub for Teletubbies is partially lost media, and I'm not sure how I would go about looking for fan dubs.
What are some anime / japanese media that drip feeds you some of the language while still being entertaining?

Yes I'm using other language learning resources like duolingo and a copy of Survival Japanese.

 No.17548

You're on the right track by using kid shows. I'd say watch something like Peppa pig's Japanese dub (you can find it on YouTube I believe) or crayon shin Chan since they're both targeted at small children. I could understand most of what was going on in the show unless they used a vocab word I hadn't learned yet, the grammar is pretty simple for both shows as well.

 No.17554

moe sol cgdct, the one with a specific hobby attached will help with vocabularies around that topic, with japanese subs if you can already read a bit. also cram vocabs with anki, it doesnt take a lot of time and is very easy, dont use duolingo it sucks and a waste of your time. also memorise basic kanji, i suggest you learn 500 basic kanji then stop learning them individually and go for vocabularies.

A thread about evrything relating to Soul Eater.

Soul Eater is the first anime i ever saw and it's the reason why i am adicted to anime so ia m pretty buiest if you ask me

 No.17553

File: 1666302471966.jpg (345.46 KB, 900x1350, 215.jpg)

haven't read/seen a lot of fire force but soul eater is good. could see it being dismissed as a random "it's ok I guess" fighting shonen by people who've read/seen boatloads of historical stuff but I think there's some really good qualities. anime-original stuff does mess with the themes and story but nothing is stopping you from watching the anime & switching to the manga when it starts deviating, especially given Okubo's early art could be very wonky (esp the faces) and the Bones visuals are amazing. just keep in mind (iirc) the "kishin egg" concept is anime-only but it's not a huge thing. visually it's peak 2000s mallgoth aesthetic (not an insult, it's very charming if done well) and Okubo improves immensely throughout the run. thematically there's some great stuff about fighting with your flaws/mental illnesses/neuroses and finding the right person to "resonate" with - Black Star isn't just a "Naruto parody" but an interesting exploration of how the brains of characters like that & their real-world counterparts work and Tsubaki is a perfect partner for him. Maka as someone who takes everything very seriously & worries a lot fights WITH her fear & her partner is an encouraging dude who doesn't take everything very seriously. Death the Kid's obsessed with symmetry so his partners are twins with very different looks and personalities. his OCD at first felt like a lame running joke but the way it was incorporated into the themes of "balance vs harmony" and how past generations saw it as purely "balance vs chaos" was great. tezca & justin stuff was really good and again very observant of how people think.

now the elephant in the room re: okubo is fire force's "woke 8 year old owns feminist" scene and sure, it's far from flawless (switching from "accidental undressing" fanservice to self-sexualization on the spot to help his point, the very concept of "woke 8yo") but I don't really care because:

1. if you check the people who attack him for fanservice on japanese social media, they aren't the japanese equivalent of your sex positive leftist friends - they're loony #istandwithjkrowling types who actually do shame irl women for self-sexualizing. it's literally not a fabricated strawman if you know that crowd!

2. it's cool seeing a guy who's not a partisan right winger call out "fanservice is evil" stuff without going off an ideological deep end, instead keeping his personal outlook. it's great how his series are jPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

What a let down. First Sonny Boy… now this… why are the japes so bad at finishing up a story?

 No.15685

The japanese seem to be mired in a cultural incapability of breaking away from their own tropes without it being heavy handed and then going back on it.
The only recent examples that aren't overdosed on tropes is hayashida q's, fukumoto nobuyuki, togashi yoshiro and fujimoto tatsuki

If it's merely a trope, that means they should understand it conceptually, and capable of proper execution.

Most criticism of weaboos is either thinly-veiled racism (when done by westerners) or self-hatred (when done by diasporoids)
Well-adjusted humans are flattered when foreigners display good faith interest in their culture. People like talking about things they enjoy.

The problem is that most of the time super weebs aren't interested in much more than fetishistic and consumeristic parody of Japanese culture. The adulation becomes Orientalist and disrespectful. It's similar to how interracial fetish porn like Blacked is in reality very racist and even how Western leftoids unintentionally disrespect historical communists when they claim that those people were like wokeist radlibs or whatever.
