The past 10 or so years the "left" had been engaged in continuing the early 2000s legalising marijuana (and as a catalyst to legalising other drugs too). Partly as GenX partied the hardest out of all the generations and could bounce from being a party freak to getting a well paying job in any industry and make up for lost time (before the dot com crash and somewhat pre-2007/2008); Partly as the political, social and economic climate was quite satisfactory and people sought legalising drugs as a main issue. Once people objected to legalising drugs the movement changed their issue to something like "freedom of expression" - accepting people's quirks and idiosyncrasies. They wagered on the gay and lesbian community (known as LGBTQ+ in recent times) as catalysts for said "freedom of expression". If the gay and lesbian community could be accepted for their quirks and idiosyncrasies the surely everyone else's would be too and began draw many kinds of people accordingly being interested in this. There was also a Timothy Leary (who was aggrandised by the illuminati fraternity and marketed him to hippies and beatniks) aspect to it too as he had advocated drugs as a kind of "food for the brain" and that embracing LGBTQ+ would culminate a golden age and high civilisation. Of course, many would be captivated by a golden age and high civilisation so they let it continue.
Socialists, Communists and Anarchists at the time co-mingled with liberals (in retrospect they were very likely involved in advocating for that wave on the whole) and noticed the "freedom of expression" wave. They co-mingled as they could speak academically to each other (at times being colleagues at a campus, sometimes letting liberals print their articles in socialist papers for instance) them and noticing the wave the Socialists, Communists and Anarchists considered that their relatively quirky and idiosyncratic theories would be accepted. The Socialists, Communists and Anarchists refrained from critiquing liberals as to preserve their friendships, workplaces and even reputation (from being denounced as a Nazi and reiterating McCartyite arguements). In addition, it was their opportunity to gain numbers.
Eventually gay and lesbian marriage secular marriage has been approved, marijuana has been semi-legalised and a gerrymandered set of quirks and idiosyncratic has been accepted yet there wasnt a golden age, no high civilisation and no swaths of people joining the socialists, communists and anarchists. Instead the socialists et al were resented obliviously for their co-mingling with liberals despite the warnings that Lenin in his writings on the Liberal intelligentsia

Gorbachev and his blantant liberal reforms were considered a great act in Europe and North America and the socialists et al accepted that in kind. The narrative in Europe and North America was that Gorbachev was failed by declining USSR - a too little, too late attitude. It was perhaps at this time that European and North American socialists and communists began to co-mingle with liberals whilst placing their hopes on China (as did they workers of the world) which has been proven to be a significant disappointment considering the unfolding of events. It was rather tragic that the people's parties, their members and advocated had become resented obliviously by the people for their apologetics of liberals and their ilk. The recent surge of $15 minimum wage, universal healthcare, universal education, student debt jubilee, a new New Deal, unionisation rights and UBI can be corrective measures to right the wrongs.
