I've only ever dipped my toes into anime, but I'd like to go further. I like fantasy, samurai, cyberpunk, and emotional stuff, and things with nature, shinto spirits, etc. I like:
Weathering With You
Samurai Champloo
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence
Vampire Hunter D
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust & Betrayal
Digimon: Last Evolution Kizuna
Lupin III
Princess Mononoke

 No.18284

What do you mean by going further? Do you want to watch increasingly obscure titles? Or just more animes? The director of Weathering with You made Your Name. which is somewhat similar but in my opinion better, you could watch that. I could list some anime films I enjoyed but I'm not sure how enticing just a simple list of titles would be.

Either. I've seen Your Name and it's great, but I actually have a slight preference for Weathering With You because the main character resonates with me more. The thing that's always been a block for me is that I've never liked the really cutesy or unfunny, goofy parts of anime, but I love a lot of the cool, mindblowing stuff.

I guess if you just name the most popular things I'll already know them, but I don't need the most obscure stuff ever. I'm just trying to get things that might appeal to my tastes, with good art, topics I like, etc. Even though I've already seen Your Name, that's the right type of suggestion.

>nature, shinto spirits

Mushishi, Noragami for the spirits, not so much nature, Haibane Renmei

>cyberpunk

Cyberpunk edgerunners, ghost in the shell, serial experiments lain

>emotional stuff

Like what emotions? romance?
if you wanna be depressed: 3 gatsu no lion, you lie in april
If you want to live the love you lack in real life: Spice and wolf, Golden time (fuck you it's better than toradora), Sono Bisque Doll, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou
if you wanna feel utter calmness: Aria the animation, my neighbor totoro

>samurai

Samurai Champloo, Katanagatari

Half of the fun of anime is watching weird shit you never though you would like, but yet you do, so don't take your categories too seriously

Thanks! I'll dig through these. And good point about exploring.

Well, you got enough recommendations from that other anon to last for a while, but I am curious, what do you mean by "cutesy or unfunny, goofy parts of anime"? Something like Yuru Yuri?

 No.18292

>>18291
Basically chibi stuff, stuff about schoolgirls acting "zany," stuff that's "kawaii uwu," that whole thing has always driven me away a bit. Or at least it did growing up. But there are so many great films, and anime runs so deep, that I really regret not spending a lot more time on it before. I grew up with things like YuYu Hakusho, Lupin III, Rurouni Kenshin, Digimon, Gundom Wing, etc., and from exploring classics I found some great films like Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Barefoot Gen, but while I always liked a lot of it, enough of it didn't resonate with me for being too goofy that it was a little bit of a block. Now I'm investing a lot more time in it.

serious answer: if you like Ghost in the Shell 1&2, you'll like the rest of Mamoru Oshii's work. Check out Angel's Egg, Patlabor 1 & 2, The Sky Crawlers, and Jin-Roh.

Do not watch Oshii's post-Sky Crawlers work.

This is the closest thing to a relevant thread I could find.
I don't watch anime but I saw vidrel on youtube and I really like the animation, but the concept (guy whos power is being stinky I guess?) Is less than interesting to me
is it worth watching? I believe its called Memories

 No.18500

>>18499
It's called Stink Bomb, it's the second out of the three short-films that make up Memories. It's been recommended on /anime/ before ( >>12062 and >>13724 ). Personally I liked it but in my opinion Stink Bomb was by far the best out of the three but people usually prefer Magnetic Rose so maybe my opinion is not to be trusted.

 No.18528

>>18499
Oh yeah, Memories is great. Watch it if you haven't.

 No.18559

>>18499
Memories is certainly worth watching especially Magnetic Rose (Stink Bomb was a bit too silly for me idk). If you want to try out similar stuff, there's a few other great anthology films like Neo Tokyo, though they're not going to have as good animation as Memories.

Im watching texhnolyze and its been a really slow burn but im starting to see why people regard it so highly. However i will say that i didnt like it at first. I thought the first 8 episodes or so were boring. Theres key plot developments and worldbuilding but it was too slow paced for my liking. Now that im through that though theres some spicy action and philosophical concepts like nihilism and a meaningless existence that are an awesome vibe. Im gonna watch the last two episodes tomorrow. Ive heard the last episode got people depressed and scared so im pretty excited.

 No.18699

well the ending was depressing but it wasnt quite what i was expecting. i didnt really get it. all i knew was the general direction that everything was headed towards, but i didnt really understand the culmination if that makes sense.

It's not about nihilism that's just the backdrop. It's about being a hero. This vid explains in depth of what's up with the setting and ending.

I thought the point was more to do with population density and limit of resources not really some message about communism.
