Luxemburg popularized "Socialism or Barbarism!" as a slogan, but the concept and phrase was coined by Kautsky in his theoretical commentary on the Erfurt Program (translated into English as The Class Struggle). Here's the quote:

<As things stand today capitalist civilization cannot continue; we must either move forward into socialism or fall back into barbarism.

I've done a bit of research into Luxemburg's use of the phrase. It first showed up in her "Junius pamphlet" denouncing the first world war and she claimed it was a quote from Engels. She was writing from prison and presumably didn't have all her books with her to verify the quote. Later on after she was released from jail, she wrote the slogan into the official program of the Spartacus League, but this time she claimed it was from the Communist Manifesto. I'm pretty sure at that point that she realized Kautsky actually coined "socialism or barbarism", but didn't want to acknowledge it in the wake of Kautsky's regression to reformism. Instead she pointed to the manifesto; hopefully the introductory Marx and Kautsky pamphlets would morph together in readers' memory and call up the quote, and it they call you out you can at least point to the "common ruin of the contending classes" line and say it was the same concept.

I hope I still do! When I read the book I chose not to make any pencil marks as I usually do for the sake of scanning later. Just got to get my ass to a library. It's probably worthwhile to formally ask for permission to put it on marxists.org or similar first though, seeing as it's been 25+ years since publication and it definitely doesn't seem to be a hot seller. The translator isn't a communist though so he might prefer to keep his $40 check a year for print on demand, who knows.

Also, the print edition I got is really poor quality. As in the cover is literally a macroblocked thumbnail stretched across the page, the paper is so thin you can see the words on the other side, and the text is riddled with transcription errors. For a $20+ pamphlet I expect more.

It's a public domain book of speeches by Wilhelm Liebknecht (the guy who made Marxism into a mass movement). If someone gets it for me you can be reasonably assured that I'll eventually digitize it for marxists.org.

Work on Wilhelm Liebknecht's volume is well underway. I've just got to finish linking up all the contextual notes and it will be ready to publish.

On another note, I found this promotion at the end of the Lassalle book. It looks like the Voices of Revolt series was originally slated to be far larger than it ended up being. Babeuf and Blanqui in particular I wish could have been released.

PS: does anyone have any idea who translated these? It's a total shot in the dark, but they don't list it in the book.

Fuck me, these contextual notes are not worth the effort. They're not endnotes per say, instead it's just a glossary at the back of the book you can refer to if you don't know a person, etc. That means to add them I basically have to memorize the whole glossary and then read the whole book a second time to find all the terms and add them in order. I've already done half of the book so I'm committed now, but if I ever do any of the other Voices of Revolt books I'm doing a straight transcription of the glossary with none of that hyperlink shit.
