After playing so many different fps titles made recently along with older ones I’ve come to the conclusion that the fucking giant that is call of duty is unkillable for the same reasons for why WoW hasn’t been annihilated when games like gw2 and oars exist. Outside of having larger player bases the games are mechanically better than the vast majority of their competition.

I hate to say this but it’s correct, I’ve noticed most fps titles that come out have horrible issues relating to the pacing of gameplay and responsiveness. Tactical shooters are a monument to this, crawling around for scraps of ammunition in stalker or leaning every second in a game like r6 or arma simply isn’t fun. I don’t know how they did it but infinity ward and trey arch found through years of play testing and redesigning how to craft a game that has a balance between the free movement and action of a game like half life/doom while having the restrictions and sense of weight you’d find in a game like counter strike or the last of us 2 and it just works, too well. I fucking despise the monetization and managing practices of activision by I’d be lying if I said a game like xdefiant or mw2022 wasn’t legitimately enjoyable for me to play through after waiting for a game that felt like half life 2 or far cry 2. The only games I can think of that have even done anything to bring attention away from the franchise are ADS free shooters like ultra kill or battle it remastered and phantom forces, both games that function more like battlefield alternatives than cod killers. Maybe there will be change maybe…

 No.29377

The best modern CoD titles were made by the same people who made Return to Castle Wolfenstein, which had a similarly good mixture of casual and tactical gameplay. You can even see some recurring elements from that game having wormed their way into CoD, like the alternate history setting and a zombie mode with a plot about occult Nazis and a selection of outlandish weapons to use.

 No.29384

Cod has terrible mechanics and terrible maps too for that matter.

Even Battle Royales like Apex Legends have greater freedom of movement and force people to think more. COD is the 8 year old's idea of an FPS because everyone dies in 0.0001 seconds so the entire meta revolves around securing a camping spot so you can get killstreaks to get ez kills to feed into more killstreaks etc. and adjusting your loadout to kill 0.000000001 seconds faster because that's all that matters.

That's why it's successful.

I wish the Tribes and Titanfall series did not die off ;_;

>COD is the 8 year old's idea of an FPS because everyone dies in 0.0001 seconds

Well I personally find the Battle Royale style fucking tedious, everyone takes 30 seconds to die instead, I can't get the hang of it and it just feels unfun. Not every game genre should be League of Legends. Battlefield 2 was the best FPS.

Anon the fast paced deaths and action is the reason for why it got popular so fucking fast along with quake. Camping and waiting for dozens of seconds to land a single kill only works game design wise if there’s stuff happening that’s engaging to the player. Tlou2 did this pretty well by keeping combat optional and allowing the player space to engage with the story in between sessions of platformint, puzzle solving and gathering resources. This happens even in fast paced games with doom, halo, half life and even cod itself takes moments during its campaign to have the player prioritize tasks outside of combat.

Different people have different approaches and expectations from games, that is why class-based and hero shooters kicked off. In TF2 and RTCW/Wolf:ET you get choice between aggressive combat classes that are designed to deal damage and push the effort, defensive ones that divert enemy fire from teammates or stay at the base and help fend off enemies and support classes that have special equipment and ability to fit niches like healing, sabotage or eliminating priority targets. What it gives is essentially a game that fits multiple player preferences, while at the same time doing it organically and integrating these playstyles into the teamwork-focused framework where victory on higher levels is decided by how well the players perform together.

to bad the playerbase is filled with obnoxious morons

 No.29406

Idk what cod is like but battlefield 2042 or whatever it’s called is unplayable for me, the maps are huge and it’s a pain int he ass to move from one place to another, the enemy somehow always manages to spot and kill you, the vehicles are an absolute nightmare to deal with. I have no idea how to play battlefield. I think halo infinite might be currently the best fps, at least in my opinion.

Its just 2142 minus all the fun sci-fi stuff. Even one of the DICE employees said it was a shit idea to begin with.

 No.29408

why can't they just make 2143 already

 No.29416

>>29384
Depends on the game.

Infinity ward maps you die in seconds, while treyarch games (again depending) it can take much longer.
Like the recent black ops cold war had a "battle royal" game mode called dirty bomb, it would take 30s to kill someone, but that's because you had armor which was a resource you had to stay ontop of; and also unlike other battle royals, if you died, you'd comeback 20 seconds later, and can go fight an enemy 10s.

>Even Battle Royales like Apex Legends have greater freedom of movement and force people to think more

I've barely played the game – but other than the robot guy, the game doesn't have much movement – and for me (who had ADHD granted), the game was so slow and uneventful, I'd have to drink energy drinks, or I would feel physical pain in my chest.

>>29386
>I wish the Tribes and Titanfall series did not die off
Never played tribes, but same on titanfall.
It's a shame that titanfall 2 didn't do well (because it's dumb release date), and apex did well which pushed the developers to focus on it, instead of making titanfall3 as originally planned.

>>29393
Yeah, only barrior which alot of modern games fail implement, is a community aspect.
TF2 was so great since you can hop on a server and get to know everyone, which made you want to work in a team.
In overwatch I'd just pick who let me fight enemies alot, and play with them, only being a "true" team player to stop from losing halfway in the round.

>I think halo infinite might be currently the best fps, at least in my opinion.

Hard to put your eggs in one game considering that alot of (AAA) games are now designed to have as minimum content multiplayers as possible, and excuse it by promising to add it content later.

 No.29421

>>29416
You are right about the content in AAA games, infinite currently has an atrocious battle pass system that has a lot filler cosmetics or xp boost and challenge swaps. It’s kind of funny how one of the main rewards of the battle pass are things that are used to make the game less grindy/shorten your playtime.

 No.29433

>>29421
I hate every Halo after Reach but the one thing Infinite did right is that their battle passes never expire. You can pick it up 5 years from now and still complete everything in the game. That level of relaxation has been removed from every other FPS competitor.

 No.29441

I hate call of duty. I just don't enjoy the gameplay at all and I mean the fundementals of it like aiming down sight for everything. I dislike it to the point that I can't enjoy cod-like games such as Titanfall since even if it is way better in level design etc., the core gameplay really doesn't appeal to me. Halo blows CoD out of the water so hard, even the mediocre new titles are orders of magnitude more engaging than the highly popular CoD machine. And they haven't had a good story since MW2.

I wish every game had ADS, hipfire feels so floaty and weird.

Maybe the best approach is both ways, make the hip fire accuracy equal to ads.

>And they haven't had a good story since MW2.

Counter point: fps campaigns are boring since 80% of difficulty is mastering the ai, and the stories aren't interesting.

everyone seems to have liked it. There is criticism about it being watered down etc and there is nostalgia for older cod games, but in general the game franchise is going strong and it’s ideological poison is only spreading. It also has a surprisingly big fan base of tumblr and ao3 people who like drawing and writing smut about the soldier men from mw2, which i find to be pretty crazy.

I jusst bought this game n PS4 because I like mechs.
Obviously very budget, the graphics, voicing, overall quality is not great but it still is a very intersting and cool game.
>>29384
Isn't Apex just Titanfall without wall running or mechs? I.e. totally worthless.

> I don’t even care about the mechs
Same here. Pilots vs Pilots is the main gamemode I play whenever I boot up titanfall 2. Apex would be the ideal fps if it didn't have BR/hero shit and had wall running.

 No.30602

>>30597
yep. mech combat just isn’t as fun as just running around as a small pilot. i think mechs are good, they add to the game, but they are not the main source of enjoyment. I have no idea why anyone likes apex, it doesn’t have any of the mechanics that made tf2 fun, I also don’t understand why they didn’t add those mechanics to apex, it’s not like anyone would conplain since everyone agrees that tf2 wall running is fun.

I like mechs a lot, having mechs act autonomously whilst you do your thing as the pilot on the ground is very very cool experience. Would honestly love to see a big budget version of this game and everything that brings mechanically and so on.

Me and my bro talk about it alot. First problem with mech games: no sense of scale. You might as well be a robot of any size. Most mech games fail to give you any propery objects to compare your size to. Games like armored core have such absurdly large buildings that just make you feel tiny. The point of a mech is to feel big. I think Shogo is the only game where you can kill infantry while you're mech. I forgot Titanfall did that too but they made infantry OP for balance.

Also destructibility is so hard to do properly. It's probably not doable with todays hardware but I think maybe.

Personally I think this is what makes playing as the Pilot on the ground whilst the mech acts autonomously is the best part of the game for making you -feel- in a mech world.
I would say though that the pilots should be a LOT more squishy to enhance this affect.

The dev is correct Titanfall 2 takes much less skill than Apex.

What people mean when they say they want wallrunning is that they want everyone to die in 0.2 seconds so they can have a 4 K/D ratio without trying

t. K/D of 6 or something ridiculous in Titanfall but K/D of 1.3 in Apex. Apex is a much harder game that engages the brain a ton more.

 No.30630

>>30629
I find titanfall more difficult because my reactions are shit while in apex it feels like you have more time to assess situations since you don't die in .02 seconds the moment someone sees you.

 No.30683

>>30629
there are better shooters for skill. Apex is boring, especially compared to the titan fall games it uses as a launching pad. Fortnite unironically is a better br.
