It sucks, of course. What's funny to me though are all the suckers on twitter that think that because of the backlash and stock price drop of the unity company, whatever it's called, this won't become the industry standard. How many times have we seen tech and media companies introduce widely hated features/requirements/monetization methods that later, through coordination between industry execs, become standard.

No. 100 times no. Unless you don't want to make a game and just experiment.

Godot has gotten to a good point and with this, I think it's inevitable it will get more traction going. Hopefully indie studios will throw some cash to the project to make it even nicer. Other than that, Unity probably has this calculated and will come out on top, somehow or another. Maybe more companies will build their own engine rather than rely on unity.

Unity Shuts Down Offices Following Death Threat
>Unity Technologies, the company behind the widely used video game engine Unity, has canceled a town meeting and closed two offices following a credible death threat. This threat comes after just days after the company announced a controversial new business model that many are calling predatory towards game developers.
>As reported by Bloomberg, Unity chief executive office John Riccitiello was the one to make the call after receiving what the company deemed a credible death threat. Riccitiello then canceled the company's scheduled meeting and announced that the company's offices in San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas would be closed for the remainder of the day.

john riccitiello has sold 2000 stocks in Unity earlier this week and has sold 50,000 + over the last year while buying none, you say

really something how many companies and businesses out there are run by people intentionally trying to tank them for short term profit and cash out before moving onto the next one, and that there's basically no consequences for this ever

nice double whammy of showing exactly how serious we are in prosecuting white collar crime like insider trading too

 No.30771

Unity doing this fucked them over, but really only because they aren't a big enough player. This kind of business model is where we are headed in the tech sector. The nature of software as a product naturally lends itself a lot more toward rent seeking than traditional commodification since it's based on virtually costless copying of the product. As capitalism tends toward post-scarcity (not in the sense of infinite resources, just enough resources), this is also where things tend to go since the supply/demand dynamics break down when supply meets or exceeds demands. It's the current "meta" for how porky can avoid a crisis of overproduction.

 No.30772

>>30771
That doesn't make any sense. According to the crisis of overproduction they should be lowering their price not raising it.

It only reinvigorated them by showing that machine learning is conceptually incapable of coming close no matter how many moving parts, that even the lowest common denominator has keen enough ability to percieve small details and attempt to interpret those details that it's insufficient, that porky vastly underestimated people's attention spans and overestimated how alienated people are, and to artists that they now cannot waste their labor on corpos even if they wanted to, because the capitalist conception of art's place has reached it's final conclusion. Nor should the want to when they could otherwise be working in coops or by themselves and not have a boss take a cut. It sped up artists as a whole becoming class concious via a strysand effect.

 No.30986

>>30772
Monopolists raise prices because they don't have competitors who can undercut them. The threat of overproduction comes form the infinite copiability of data. You can't reduce the production of that the way you can with tangible goods, so the supply has to be artificially constrained in some other way. Combine those factors - monopoly and free copying - and the solution they reach is rent-seeking.

shit like this is why i'm worried for the future of entertainment under capitalism and whether it'll still even exist beyond the worst marvel/aaa slop. i probably won't run out of things to watch and play within my lifetime just because of how much cinema, anime, tv shows and vidya there really is, but it's really weird to consider that we're in a period where media is already dead with remakes and squeakuels and companies are about to kill it harder, possibly until capitalism gets so unbearable that people won't even have the money to spend on spectacle and consooming.

i think a lot of it has to do with delusional and childish (i mean literally child-developed culture, for other children) social norms that develop around protecting delusional bottom-tier creators' belief that they are producing something of great value and skillfulness. like not only in the literal sense of they are challenged by the AI obsoleting them, also in the sense of they cheerlead and support the norm entrepreneurship of unions of actual paid creatives like screenwriters in order to create the impression that they are the same people

Artists can and do find neat uses for AI as the procedural art tool it can be. The idea that it can replace artists as a practice or trivialize it is just techbro marketing brainworms. Artists will do "hard art" because they can and want to and see the precison as necessary or what they're trying to accomplish. The way of thinking you're stuck in is precisely what's holding AI back.
>they're all [blatantly false / unmeasurable statistical assertion]
Stop watching outrage farms. Most artists are leftist / anarchists, SEO just favors those with the same opinions as search engine owners.
>>31024

This reply is wild, just posting like your average chantard and then calling others channers as an insult. "People who achieve adulthood don't need to "wojak vs gigachad" their opinions."? Who even talks like this? You couldn't even actually address the post you're replying to.

Treating your job as an identity is dumb capitalist bullshit, artists aren't special and you have to be tripping to say most of them are "leftist / anarchists". Most of them are liberals, because that's the status quo, unless you think being a liberal is leftist which would make most of the world leftist lmao (useless left-right dichotomy at work) - you even call it out for being an unmeasurable statistical assertion and then make an even wilder one. Feel free to prove otherwise without handwaving it with "SEO", because being an artist isn't some mystical essence, anybody can be one.

AI art won't replace artists because everyone using it is an artist, unless you believe remixing, sampling or collaging isn't art or whatever other arbitrary definition of art that conveniently turns you into a special boy and drags multiple art forms into the mud. You can do pretty cool stuff with it if you actually know how to write positive and negative prompts - prompting really is a craft and you can make an LLM do basically anything you want better than 75% of humans if you're even half-decent at prompting it.

Anyway people think their brains are literally magic and that ideas come from the void, which is totally compatible with information science which they definitely know about. ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯

The one I neglected to address didn't seem to have a core to address to.
>Treating your job as an identity
Artist is a descriptor for someone who makes art, you're projecting you own discontent with your own consumed identity trying to frame it as such.
AI art that has fruit, as you put it, is when the artist behind it sees it as the best tool for what they wanted to make. It is a form of procedural art, not "the big evil robot that justifies me asking for lower commission prices from those making art by higher precision means"
>Most of them are liberals
Unmeasurable statistical assertion founded on vibes. Most of them are educated or have peers who are, leading to anti-status quo leftist politics.
>Feel free to prove otherwise without handwaving it with "SEO", because being an artist isn't some mystical essence, anybody can be one.
Just look at conventional online artist spaces, liberal and conservative artists are clearly a niche in a bubble from the rest, I never denied their existance. They are more hireable for making corpo stuff though.
>AI art won't replace artists because everyone using it is an artist
When used for artistic purposes rather than marketing purposes, where the "AI vs. Artist" ramble stems from.
>special (derogatory)
Man, it's been a while since I've heard this one.
>better than [number]% of humans
For your desired level of precision for your project. Eventually you might even get curious and try a hybrid approach like I exampled previously. At no point had I asserted otherwise.

It feels like you skimmed over what I said enough to pin me on a "side" of the boilerplate discussion on this matter, then dumped your takes on the boilerplate live as though I had already asserted against such.

Nobody tell 'em.

You also missed the other posters implicit point that AI will make it easier for others to become "artists". They only added the critical note that being an artist is more than just generating an image. They didn't even specify if that takes more than curation, just that it requires "specificity".
Instead of assuming an aloof, but unnecessary, meta perspective, first actually engage with a text on its face. Top psued.
