Post dumb pseudoscientific nonsense, poorly-written pop-sci and other junk science topics to make fun of and critique

>The anatomy of the brain necessarily constrains its function, but precisely how remains unclear. The classical and dominant paradigm in neuroscience is that neuronal dynamics are driven by interactions between discrete, functionally specialized cell populations connected by a complex array of axonal fibres1,2,3. However, predictions from neural field theory, an established mathematical framework for modelling large-scale brain activity4,5,6, suggest that the geometry of the brain may represent a more fundamental constraint on dynamics than complex interregional connectivity7,8. Here, we confirm these theoretical predictions by analysing human magnetic resonance imaging data acquired under spontaneous and diverse task-evoked conditions. Specifically, we show that cortical and subcortical activity can be parsimoniously understood as resulting from excitations of fundamental, resonant modes of the brain’s geometry (that is, its shape) rather than from modes of complex interregional connectivity, as classically assumed. We then use these geometric modes to show that task-evoked activations across over 10,000 brain maps are not confined to focal areas, as widely believed, but instead excite brain-wide modes with wavelengths spanning over 60 mm. Finally, we confirm predictions that the close link between geometry and function is explained by a dominant role for wave-like activity, showing that wave dynamics can reproduce numerous canonical spatiotemporal properties of spontaneous and evoked recordings. Our findings challenge prevailing views and identify a previously underappreciated role of geometry in shaping function, as predicted by a unifying and physically principled model of brain-wide dynamics.

The last refuge of the racists. You can make math do anything. Not the same topic, but Stephen Jay Gould in his book goes deep into (1/3 of the book, 60 pages lol) a particular useful mathematical tool that has been used by racists to push their agenda. He also mentions phrenologists, so kinda similar topic.

THE INJUSTICE OF UNDER-POLICING IN AMERICA
https://direct.mit.edu/ajle/article/doi/10.1162/ajle_a_00030/112647/THE-INJUSTICE-OF-UNDER-POLICING-IN-AMERICA1
>Introduction
>…The American criminal legal system is unjust and inefficient. But, as we argue in this essay, over-policing is not the problem. In fact, the American criminal legal system is characterized by an exceptional kind of under-policing, and a heavy reliance on long prison sentences, compared to other developed nations. In this country, roughly three people are incarcerated per police officer employed. The rest of the developed world strikes a diametrically opposite balance between these twin arms of the penal state, employing roughly three and a half times more police officers than the number of people they incarcerate. We argue that the United States has it backward. Justice and efficiency demand that we strike a balance between policing and incarceration more like that of the rest of the developed world. We call this the “First World Balance.”
>We defend this idea in much more detail in a forthcoming book titled What’s Wrong with Mass Incarceration. This essay offers a preliminary sketch of some of the arguments in the book. In the spirit of conversation and debate, in this essay we err deliberately on the side of comprehensiveness rather than argumentative rigor. One of us is a social scientist, and the other is a philosopher and legal scholar.

This guy is a total hack: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yAIOykJ9pbg
>The only piece of physical evidence they have are these lines and bore holes on granite rock.
>But those lines aren't significant, it is obvious Egyptians did it all by themselves cause it is similar in design to everything else.
Do you see the problem? He dismisses evidence inconvenient to him, declares it is irrelevant and then alludes to some "obvious" truth we should all be aware of that doesn't need proving. It's dishonest and liberal.

Does that guy even work as an archeologist? I like how MiniMan and Milo didn't get into the field of archeology, so the next best thing they thought of doing is repeating the dominant narrative in video form. It's as if I went to talk about communism and Marx but the only books I used are bourgeois economics books, and then I triumphantly declare that obviously communism doesn't work.

Go to 11:20, when he starts deboooonking. He says there was no rapid sea level rise after the younger dryas. Direct quote: "At the end of the last ice age, sea levels were slowly rising. About 14.000 years ago the sea level were rising by about that much *draws a tiny line on the board* about 20mm per year. and by about 11.000BC the rate of sea level rise dramatic ally decreased, *smug liberal chortle*, to about 4mm. Needless to say that this would be a sea level rise that would be infitesimal on the human perception scale. … at the peak of the melt, 11.450BC there was a rise of about 40mm per year, still not enough for people to notice."

My problem with liberals like him and you is that you take a debated issue, then settle it in a way that suits you. What he is saying is not the "accepted view" at all, and you should actually look at some scientific journals on the topic, not get all your knowledge from a youtube video.

>A more clearly-defined accelerated phase of sea level rise occurred between 14,600 to 13,500 years before present (termed "meltwater pulse 1A" or "MWP-1A" by Fairbanks in 1989), when sea level increased by some 16 to 24 m (see Figure 1). Although the meltwater was previously believed to have come chiefly from Antarctica, a recent reconstruction by Tarasov and Peltier of ice sheet retreat using a glacial model calibrated by a variety of data points instead to a largely North American source. Furthermore, diatom fossils in sediments from fjords in East Antarctica show that ice melting there began perhaps 3000 years later, thus ruling out Antarctica as a likely source.

https://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/briefs/2007_gornitz_09/
MiniMan doesn't even mention meltwater pulse 1A and he misrepresents the sea level rise.

>A problem with this hypothesis is the timing of meltwater pulses that are supposed to have triggered the THC shutdown: it was found that a second meltwater pulse, albeit slightly smaller than the first one, occurred at the end of the YD (Fairbanks, 1989): why didn't it also trigger a similar chain of consequences in the climate system?

>An alternate explanation (Clement et al., 2001) invokes the abrupt cessation in the El Nino -Southern Oscillation in response to changes in the orbital parameters of the Earth, although how such a change would impact regions away from the Tropics remains to be explained.

>The respective merits of both hypotheses have been laid out by Broecker (2003). The issue is far from being settled, and actively researched at Lamont and elsewhere.

https://ocp.ldeo.columbia.edu/res/div/ocp/arch/examples.shtml

MiniMan probably has a BA in Archeology from some flyover state university. It is obvious he doesn't actually himself understand what he is talking about when it comes to geology, math and s on. In one of the debunking video he gets confused about the negative BC years and which date comes earlier/later.

He made the video.for clicks, to capitalise on Hancock's Netflix show, except he targets the I Fucking Love Science liberals like you, who aren't actually gonna double-check what it says, cause it feels right. Just how you will dismiss NASA and Columbia U because it doesn't feel right.

So far the "Hancock schizo" has linked and used over a dozen scientific papers/articles, while the anti-Hancock libs have posted a single YouTube video over a dozen times. That is the privilege one has when they espouse the dominant ideology. That is why libs never feel a need to argue against communism, dominant ideology settled that matter.

It is what the lib is trying to do here. Assert that the liberal, dominant view/ideology is correct and any debate is not only unnecessary, but a sign of a "schizo". There's talk about toxic culture on this board, well this is a prime example.

OK. But lets say I am not.

As I said, he mentions the first meltwater pulse, 1A, and then he says release of all that cold water made the Earth warmer (look, I can do it too!). However, he doesn't mention the other meltwater pulse that I quoted from columbia.edu

So, the only explanation that makes sense is that the Younger Dryas melt happened because of an impact of a meteor.

I'm a bit drunk now so I might be making mistakes. I will look into this more later. But know this: I am not trolling, and I am genuinely interested in this topic. There are two 300+ post threads of this, but they are not allowed to be posted.

I also had a problem with him.saying that sea level rising 2cm a year is not a big deal. A rise of 100-120cm in a lifetime of a person, that person would definitely notice and take note of it. They'd probably had been forced to move. Then they'd see it is not a localised event, but a global one. Everything would look flooded to them: trees in water, grassy hills.covered in water. The fact he completely disregards the subjective human experience by ridiculing the "tiny rise" shows he is an idealist, smug liberal, and a deepthroater of analytical philosophy. To a Marxist this is obvious.

the problem with MiniMan and all these deboonking videos is that they don't take the approach of "let's see if it's wrong" but "I know it's wrong, now I have to look into it to see exactly how wrong it is". If on the first reading you are looking for gotchas and ways to defeat it, rather than reading it neutrally, with arguments for or against popping up naturally like they do with any critical reading, then you aren't being honest and you will miss things, cause you'll be operating on confirmation bias.

Already tried that. /siberia/ is too fast and a thread with effortlposts doesn't belong in /siberia/. I've written nearly two full threads of arguments with only a few of them answered. The pattern went like this.
>detractors make a claim
>I show how their claim doesn't even make sense vis-a-vis contemporary archeology
>ignore it, onto the next one
>show flaws in that
>ignore my post, onto the next one
It was two full threads of this. It became obvious people don't really know what even modern archeology says: one anon saying it is perfectly reasonable to assume, from a contemporary archeology perspective, that people in 12.000 BCE had ocean-going ships, or another anon wrongfully claiming the Sphinx was built, rather than chiseled out of the bedrock where it sits. Or anons not knowing there are no hieroglyphics anywhere on or inside the pyramids, or that no mummy or sarcophagus was ever found in any of the pyramids of Giza. And so on.

It ends up with me fixing and writing the arguments against myself (I actually changed my mind on a few things). That I can do sitting in my chair, in my head, with way less effort, and definitely don't need other anons calling me stupid while getting the basics wrong. And then once the main anti-Hancock person ran out of arguments, they stopped reading my posts altogether and started writing flaming insults.
