Mexican lake is being sucked dry by development, drought and lawlessness
Residents said Thursday that Valle — as the reservoir has been known since the 1940s — is being drained by Mexico City’s refusal to fix broken pipes that waste much of its water, as well as the unrestrained construction of private dams and holding ponds by suspiciously wealthy and powerful newcomers. In a country where the government appears not to listen and gang violence is common, residents and activists can only watch as their beloved lake disappears. The National Water Commission, known by its Spanish initials as Conagua, has done little to remedy the problem.

Petro urges UN narcotics commission to focus on healthcare
In a video message, Petro reiterated that his government considered the so-called War on Drugs a failure that justified human rights violations against Latin American rural communities that were associated with the cultivation of coca, the base ingredient of cocaine. “We turned our peasant, indigenous and Afro communities into enemies. We massively and systematically violated rights,” the president told the UNCND in a video message.

Uber Australia Is Creating a Yellow Union to Head Off Reform
Since 2017, fifteen food-delivery riders have lost their lives on Australian roads. And this is only the most tragic outcome of an industry that systematically mistreats workers. As numerous media reports have revealed, gig workers face substandard rights and a myriad of workplace dangers as they struggle to make ends meet on paltry wages. Over the last year, however, the Anthony Albanese Labor government has pressed ahead with its plans to regulate gig work, putting companies like Uber under pressure. In response, Uber has ramped up initiatives to ensure it can continue to profitably operate in Australia, which has been described as Uber’s “crown jewel” due to the phenomenal profits the company makes there. The company has engaged closely with Parliament on the gig-worker reforms. And, aware that the Transport Workers’ Union is attempting to organize, or at least regulate, the industry, Uber has also set up a national committee to consult with its workers on health and safety issues. However, according to one of the workers’ representatives who spoke to Jacobin, Uber’s committee might not be as empowering or representative as the company claims.

Real wages, productivity, and prosperity: Have workers ‘never had it so good’?
“Lies, damned lies, and statistics” is a well-known aphorism for a reason. By massaging the figures cleverly, it’s possible to ‘prove’ anything. Last year, The Economist magazine ran a series of articles claiming that workers have ‘never had it so good’. Real wages are better now than they have been in decades, we’re told. The income differential between the very top and the very bottom is apparently shrinking. Strangely enough, though, workers everywhere are clearly still angry. Our learned, liberal journalists have the answer to this riddle, thankfully. It’s all a question of ‘narrative’. These workers, despite everything, simply believe that they are worse off. So that’s all right then! There’s just one small question: are these optimistic assertions true?

William D. Haywood: Organize – Organize Right!
Note – The following letter was written by Fellow Worker Haywood, to a worker in Indiana. It so well explains the difference between craft and industrial unionism, that we reprint it here in full. YOU ask me to give you ten good reasons why any craft union should withdraw from the A.F. of L. Here they are: If the membership of a craft union has no broader outlook on life than the narrow confines and limitations of their craft, there is no reason why they should withdraw from the American Federation of Labor, as that is the institution in which they belong. But, if the membership of the said craft union has had experience and knocks enough to make them realize the class struggle that is going on every minute in present-day society, then there are reasons why they should change from the craft to the industrial form of organization. 1st. The modern method of production, new inventions and the development of machinery, has eliminated many craft unions. I have on my desk a glass paper weight, in which is a picture of the Owens Glass Bottle Blowing Machine. This machine has eliminated the trade or craftsman in that particular branch of industry. Other machines are doing the same thing in other lines.
