For the record the reason why I'm not putting this in the USApol general is because I feel like what's talked about here can be applied to any major city that thrives on gambling, nightlife, and the general idea of "vice".

Las Vegas, for those that are unfamiliar with it, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world or good reason. With larger than life resorts, oversized casinos, drinks and gambling all abound, and of course crippling poverty and gaudy stark concrete the moment you look off the Vegas Strip. Gambling aside, there's a ridiculous amount of live shows, concerts, oddball museums, overpriced clubs, and most of all constant grifters. As in "the moment you step outside the resort you're going to have at least three people aggressively panhandle you within five minutes" type not seen outside LA. Also there's a giant emoji ball which stares at you in a vaguely menacing manner if you walk close enough.

So yeah, it's pretty much a microcosm of all that is wrong with capitalism, with the added bonus of its night life existing because of actual mafiosos. But there's also quite a lot of shit there, and more importantly a lot of people. So my question is this: if America underwent a communist revolution, be it by ballot or bullet and by whatever flavor of radical leftism you want, what would happen to Vegas? Would it still exist largely as it is today? How heavily would it need to be modified to be reintegrated as part of socialist society? Do we demolish it entirely and replace it with something else? Do we leave it to rot, as a monument to the failures of capitalism?

It's possible that the most ecologically sound thing to do is to let it rot, seeing as it's in the middle of a desert, but until then I don't see anything wrong with letting it go on as a city of shows and so on. The casinos and hotels are pretty if gaudy, might as well use them for conferences or events and so on. It's not like a city can be ontologically evil (except for Dubai).

What happens to Phoenix? All of New Mexico/West Texas/Nevada/Arizona/Mojave California could be done away with.

Reverse question, what happens to the select few areas on Earth that are hospitable to human life under socialism? Obviously these places hold a premium under a free choice system. Better to be a plumber in Honolulu than Kansas City.

I disagree. Las Vegas is a microcosm of all that is funny about capitalism. It's possibly the most cartoonishly capitalist place on earth, to the point where it stops being depressing and loops back around to being amusing. It's as if you combined LA with fucking Disney World.

But to answer your question, I say it stays, just in a much smaller capacity, gradually scaling back until it becomes something acceptable. It's good to have some relaxation and entertainment, we just can't be wasteful about it. Something like Vegas isn't inherently bad, the problem is when it becomes excessive, and Vegas as it stands is 90% excess.

Las Vegas is also a major hub for trade shows and conferences because of the abundant convention halls, hotels, etc.

I was raised by rational atheist Skeptic™ people and went there as a kid with the parents to attend one of their conferences, so I was in the middle of the Strip hanging around a conventional hall full of atheists and some of them asking panelists like "what do you think about putting weapons in space???" I also ran into Penn Jillette, the libertarian magician, who was hanging out and was like "augh fuck I'm hungry mma go get McDonald's." (He's fat.)

Las Vegas is very cyberpunk. Rich, excess, fantasy worlds, Disney for adults essentially, meanwhile, you have an invisible underclass of which some live literally in the sewers.

All cities in the west at least have this Las Vegification where the poorest, the undesirables, etc are physically removed from public spaces in order to make the public spaces more livable and enjoyable to the "normal" "citizens".

Some rich places even kick out anyone that doesn't look explicitly rich but are otherwise """normal citizens"""" (housed, job, car, no drugs, etc). Especially if they look black. People who have never been profiled in their entire life, and might even believe themselves to be upper-middle class are suddenly charged with loitering for eating an ice cream outside an ice cream parlor in a very rich neighborhood.

Ooooh, that's on Fremont Street. Unfortunately my degree of familiarity with Vegas begins and ends largely with the Strip, my girlfriend didn't particularly want to visit downtown so we avoided it. All I know about that area is to avoid the Gold Nugget, and that the gambling is much cheaper on Fremont than on the Strip. Also it might seem like a good idea to walk from one part of the city to another but I promise, if it's more than a few blocks away you'll want to take an uber.

On the subject of things to do, I highly recommend you check out Area 15 by Meow Wolf if you dont already have tickets for that, it's a pretty damn surreal experience. And if you do plan on gambling, apparently these particular machines seem to be slightly more likely to win you money than others so I've been told, but you're probably better off just playing poker

They have long been replaced and aren't really a political force in Vegas since the 1970s. It's MGM and Sand Corporation, founded by the Jew Adelson, who is one of the biggest donors of Trump and Netanyahu, and various politicians, judges sheriffs who are paid off by said casino corporations. At best, organized crime might be involved with some pimping here and there.

I've visited Macau recently and it was a beautiful city. The casinos were actually cool because so many people were inside them that the outside world was quite empty, so it felt refreshing to walk around these lonely streets in the summer and discover the city at a leisurely place. Most of the casinos there are owned by Amerikkkans, by the way.

There is nothing in communism that says we have to give up resort areas, lol. The gambling aspect can go away but the live entertainment, museums, spas and so on can all stay. Las Vegas is probably more gaudy than Macau so I can't comment on that specific city.
