UK court says Assange can’t be extradited on espionage charges until US rules out death penalty
Two High Court judges said they would grant Assange a new appeal unless U.S. authorities give further assurances within three weeks about what will happen to him. The ruling means the legal saga, which has dragged on for more than a decade, will continue — and Assange will remain inside London’s high-security Belmarsh Prison, where he has spent the last five years.

Wages in Argentina Suffer Record Drop After Milei Devalues Peso
Paychecks plunged 11% in December from November when adjusted for inflation, the largest monthly loss in income since the government’s labor market reports began 29 years ago. The decline, while partially compensated by wage gains in January, led to a “significant drop” in consumer purchasing power, the government said.

Brazil and Colombia voice concern as Venezuela bans opposition candidate
The scuppering of Yoris’s candidacy prompted an unusually firm response from the governments of Brazil and Colombia, which have both been trying to coax Maduro back towards democratic governance. “Based on available information, the candidate put forwards by the Unitary platform … was prevented from registering, which is not compatible with the Barbados agreement,” Brazil’s foreign ministry said, in reference to a deal between Maduro’s government and the opposition last October intended to ensure free and fair elections.

On Tuesday, Kejriwal's supporters attempted to march to Modi's residence, but were stopped by police at a location where they gathered about 5 km (3 miles) away.

ABC Australia staff’s concerns over pro-Israel bias revealed
“We’re worried the language we’re using in our coverage is askew, favoring the Israeli narrative over objective reporting. This is evident in our reluctance to use words such as ‘War crimes’, ‘Genocide”, ‘Ethnic cleansing’, ‘Apartheid’ and ‘Occupation’ to describe the various aspects of the Israeli practices in Gaza and the West Bank, even when the words are attributed to respectable organisations and sources,” staff said in the document, which is signed “Concerned ABC journalists and staff” and addressed to “managers and colleagues”.

if Keith starmer gets into power game over for Assange

>As part of his cooperation with the US, Starmer developed a close and mutually admiring relationship with Eric Holder, the US attorney general who in 2010 had authorised several actions aimed at prosecuting the Wikileaks founder. At this time, Assange was wanted by Swedish authorities for questioning over sexual assault allegations, but he refused to travel to Sweden for fear he would be sent onwards to the US.

>We also know Starmer worked directly with the US Department of Justice (DoJ) to extradite other suspects. Upon his appointment in 2008, he inherited the case of Gary McKinnon, an autistic IT expert who had gained unauthorised access to US military databases, hoping to find information about UFOs. Although McKinnon never published any of his findings, the security breach was a major embarrassment for the US state, which issued an indictment that would have seen the hacker imprisoned for up to 70 years.

>Starmer pledged to do everything in his power to deliver McKinnon to Holder. The defendant was hounded through the courts until 2012, becoming increasingly depressed and suicidal as successive appeals were thrown out. Yet just when it seemed his fate was sealed, home secretary Theresa May suddenly withdrew the extradition order, concluding that “after careful consideration of all of the relevant material […] Mr McKinnon’s extradition would give rise to such a high risk of him ending his life that a decision to extradite would be incompatible with Mr McKinnon’s human rights”. Starmer is reported to have reacted with fury. The next day he boarded a plane to Washington and met with Holder’s deputies to plead that this episode should not jeopardise their future relationship.

>Another recipient of Starmer’s clemency was Tzipi Livni, the former Israeli foreign minister who was part of the Israeli war cabinet during the 2008 assault on Gaza that killed an estimated 1,400 Palestinians, 333 of them children. When she arrived in Britain on the invitation of William Hague, some of Starmer’s former comrades from the Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers handed him a private application for her arrest on war crimes charges (bolstered by a damning UN report on Israel’s actions). Starmer could have approved the request immediately and brought Livni in for questioning; but instead, he delayed for long enough that the Foreign Office was able issue a certificate designating her visit a ‘special mission’ during which she should be immune from prosecution.

War on Gaza: While eyes are on Rafah, Israel is cementing control of northern Gaza
Following his recent approval of a plan to invade Rafah - where 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced last week that the military is preparing to advance. The so-called "triumvirate" war cabinet comprising Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and former opposition leader Benny Gantz, had already reached a consensus on a Rafah incursion to take control of the Philadelphi corridor (also called the Philadelphi route or Saladin axis). In an address to the US pro-Israel lobby group Aipac, Netanyahu insisted that the "road to victory runs through Rafah", a strategy that he boasts has "overwhelming support" within Israeli society. Yet, while Israeli politicians' threats of an imminent invasion of Rafah are directing the world's attention to the south, the government has accelerated steps on the ground in northern Gaza to consolidate its occupation and ensure its longevity. A key feature of its strategy is to prevent the return of displaced Palestinians from the south as it seeks to change the geographical and demographic characteristics of the Gaza Strip.

What “The Daily” Gets Right and Wrong about Oregon’s Move to Recriminalize Drugs
Many are now asking, what went wrong in Oregon? As a recent episode of The Daily from the New York Times correctly indicated, there were a lot of problems with Prop 110 from the start. The act was to include two main components: decriminalization and an increase in substance-use services and supports. While decriminalization occurred, there were significant delays in launching treatment programs, since the infrastructure for them was lacking. Meanwhile, there were also delays in funding for other necessary services, like housing. The Daily also correctly notes that when Prop 110 was passed, the COVID-19 pandemic took place amid an influx of fentanyl. Even after a cursory evaluation, it becomes clear that, contrary to what the proposition’s opponents would like to claim, many factors have contributed to the increasing number of overdose deaths in Oregon besides Proposition 110’s passing. This led one lawmaker in Oregon to note that, given the lack of treatment options in the state, Oregon was the worst place to experiment with decriminalization.

West Papua: The Torture Mode Of Governance
The latest example to come out of West Papua is from a highlands place called Yahukimo (named for the Yali, Hubla, Kimyal, and Momuna tribes in the area) with a population of about 362,000 (but more than half the population of Melanesian West Papua consists of Indonesian transmigrants—another slow but effective mechanism of genocide). Look at the videos, if you can stomach them. Look anyway, even if it makes you want to throw up, because this affects everyone who has something called humanity. Here we see young Indonesians having fun as they joke about taking turns to thrash, stab, slash, and kick the “animal flesh” of a West Papuan man they have made to stand in a drum of freezing water. Seeing the suffering of the shivering, wounded man is unbearable. Seeing young men amused about what they’re doing to him is also unbearable. What world raised them to do this with their young lives? This is nothing new in Yahukimo. Last month two teenage boys were arrested and tortured by grinning Indonesian soldiers, who took trophy photos of their victims. Another five teenage boys were murdered by Indonesian soldiers in September 2023. Two women were raped and murdered last October. Some 40% of woman torture victims are raped. Illegal gold mining is killing people with mercury, precious metals, and in the name of security for the miners. Dozens of people have died in a recent famine in Yahukimo. That didn’t make world headlines either. Famine also happened in 2006, 2009, also unheadlined. It’s normal there. But who knows or cares about Yahukimo?
