Big corporations are quietly taking over your medical practice. Some doctors and experts say it's ruining healthcare.
Nearly 78% of US doctors are employed by hospitals or other corporate entities, such as insurers and PE firms, according to research from consultancy Avalere and the Physicians Advocacy Institute. For the first time, more medical practices were owned by corporate entities (30%) than hospitals (28%) as of January 2024, the research found.

L.A. cuts tentative deal to provide $15 million to spare Chinatown tenants from steep rent hikes
The proposed agreement would require the city to spend nearly $15 million to ensure that rents are subsidized in dozens of units inside the Hillside Villa Apartments, according to a memo issued Friday by the city’s housing department. The agreement would run through February 2034 and cover 106 of the building’s 124 units. For some renters, the subsidies would close the gap between the amount they were paying in 2019 and the market-rate rent the landlord wants to charge, city officials said.

Missouri could crack down on water exports to drought-weary West
The measure would largely forbid the export of water across state lines without a permit, even though there is no evidence that is happening on any large scale. Just the specter of water scarcity is inspiring bipartisan support. Besides persistent drought in parts of the state and plummeting Mississippi River levels in recent months and years, lawmakers are wary of the West, and the chance that thirsty communities facing dwindling water supplies will look east for lakes and rivers to tap.

Pro-Palestine Activists in France Get Summons from Anti-Terrorist Police
Imperialist governments continue to repress the international movement for Palestine, and France is no exception. Two members of Left Voice’s sister group, Révolution Permanente (RP), have received summons for questioning by the GLAT, an “anti-terrorism” judicial police unit. The police claim this is part of an investigation into comments allegedly made online since October 7 which “glorify terrorism.” One of the two activists who received a summons is Anasse Kazib, a rail worker of Moroccan descent who has for years been a public figure and spokesperson for RP. Kazib published a statement on social media which, among other points, says: "This will not prevent us from continuing to express our support for the Palestinian people and all exploited and oppressed across the planet. More than ever, at a time when tendencies towards war are strengthening, we can only count on our struggles!" The statement is already being widely circulated, and prominent leaders of the Left in France have voiced solidarity with the activists and denounced the repression on Twitter.

We are now into week three of the public inquiry into the foreign interference scandal and already there have been no shortage of apparent bombshells. Presided over by Quebec appellate court judge Marie-Josée Hogue, the hearings in Ottawa have witnessed a parade of politicians and government bureaucrats offering up alarming testimony. The inquiry’s focus is on whether foreign governments interfered in the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. Canada’s intelligence agencies, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS) and Communications Security Establishment (CSE), say China, India, and other governments attempted to meddle in both. For the Conservative Party, these claims have been the source of outrage, as they feel they were the target of the alleged meddling. Last week, former Conservative leader Erin O’Toole told the inquiry that foreign interference likely cost his party five to nine seats in 2021… “The small number of seats would not have impacted the minority government that Canada has right now, but the difference of two, three, five seats may have allowed me more of a moral justification to remain as leader,” he said. At the root of the scandal is whether foreign interference had any real impact on the elections’ outcomes. On this matter, there were differences of opinions between some intelligence officials and their political overseers in Ottawa. Hogue’s final report, which won’t be completed until the end of the year, should finally put to rest who was correct. …
