Congress party is a 'mureed' of Pakistan: PM Modi
The Prime Minister further alleged that the Congress party aims to amend the country's Constitution to provide reservation for Muslims, taking away from the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, and Other Backward Classes (OBC) communities. He challenged the Congress to put in writing that they would not change the Constitution to provide religion-based reservation or give backdoor quota to Muslims in states where they and their allies are in power.

Quebec premier says police should dismantle pro-Palestinian student camp
Earlier in the week, a Quebec court rejected an injunction request from two students to move the camp to a different location. The students told the court the current location of the protest interferes with their ability to safely attend class. In her ruling, Justice Chantale Masse said the students failed to show “irreparable harm” and that to remove the protesters would “significantly” affect their right to freedom of expression.

Saudi Arabia cracks down on tweets against Israel's war on Gaza
Riyadh and its regional allies, including Egypt and Jordan, have clamped down on protests in their own countries with fears that pro-Palestine rallies could reignite uprisings against authorities in those countries. "Memories of the Arab Spring more than a decade ago remain fresh among regional rulers, who are desperate to avoid a repeat," the report said.

Tunisian opposition wants political prisoners freed before taking part in presidential election
More than 20 political opponents have been charged or imprisoned since Saied consolidated power in 2021 by suspending parliament and rewriting the country’s constitution. Voters weary of political and economic turmoil approved his constitutional changes in a 2021 referendum with low turnout. Saied is widely expected to run in the presidential election, likely to take place in September or October. It is unclear if anyone will challenge him.

The town of Rubaya holds deposits of tantalum, which is extracted from coltan, a key component in the production of smartphones. Britain offloads its refugee crisis to Ireland. Dublin is aghast.
Now, with the U.K.’s tough new immigration laws having finally cleared Parliament and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promising to start deporting asylum seekers within weeks, Ireland is experiencing an unprecedented surge in migration from Britain. As asylum seekers flee the Sunak government’s threat to ship them to the East African nation of Rwanda, with limited rights to appeal, many are leaving Britain and entering the Republic of Ireland by crossing the checks-free border with its U.K. neighbor, Northern Ireland.

Wildfire risk worsened by cuts, warns FBU
FBU executive member for Scotland Colin Brown told the Star: “FBU members know only too well about the rising number and scale of wildfires across Scotland. “These fires by their very nature are resource intensive, often requiring tens, at times hundreds of firefighters over many days to extinguish, in turn leaving other areas with reduced fire cover. “The loss of more than 1,200 firefighter posts across Scotland in the last decade only adds to this pressure on already scarce resources.

NYPD issues arrest figures amid ‘outside agitator’ claim at Columbia Gaza protest
The NYPD also said 60% of arrestees at City College of New York (CCNY) on Tuesday night were unaffiliated with the college, though a CCNY spokesperson confirmed to the Guardian that these arrest figures applied to protesters both on and off the college’s grounds. The statements came as police across the US have arrested almost 2,200 people at campus protests in 43 different locations during a week of heightened tension and unrest that has often been met with tough action from law enforcement.

Big Brother Is Watching The Protesters, Sponsored By Corporate America
This week on Lever Time, David Sirota and producer Arjun Singh look at college protests in the age of total surveillance. They talk with Alistair Kitchen, a student journalist who’s been reporting from Columbia’s campus, and explore how corporate America has taught the intelligence community new ways to use consumer data to spy on people everywhere. As colleges and police departments crack down on campus protests, law enforcement are using tools borrowed from corporate America’s ballooning surveillance regime to spy on students — and anyone else they deem a threat. When New York City police raided Columbia University on Tuesday to remove student protesters from a building they’d occupied, Mayor Eric Adams justified the move by claiming “outside agitators” had infiltrated the group. If the claim was even true, how did authorities get that information? What sort of technologies are authorities using to monitor the protesters — and where did these spy tools come from?

Tory local election wipeout: Another nail in the Conservatives’ coffin
Compared to other events over the past week – from the explosive student movement breaking out on either side of the Atlantic, to the ongoing genocidal massacre in Gaza, to the political drama unfolding in Scotland – yesterday’s local elections across England and Wales seem a relatively quaint affair. Indeed, with none of the major political parties offering any alternative to austerity when it comes to bankrupt local councils, it is unsurprising to see such little enthusiasm or interest in these parochial contests amongst potential voters. Nevertheless, with the Tories facing an almost full-house of defeats – from hundreds of council seats, to mayoral positions, to their seat in Blackpool South – this year’s election results could have greater ramifications than usual. For Rishi Sunak, a prime minister living on borrowed time, they could prove to be the final nail in the coffin.

The Uncommitted Campaign in New Jersey: The Fight To End Genocide Continues
A sense of urgency loomed over Fatima Mughal, one of the leading organizers behind the uncommitted campaign in New Jersey. Some emotional containment was necessary in the midst of an ongoing genocide. “The people who’ve lost so much in Gaza don’t have the time to sit with their feelings,” she expressed, referring to the 40,000 Palestinian lives killed by the Israeli state since late last year. The uncommitted movement had initially started in Michigan, where over 100,000 registered Democrats voted “uncommitted” instead of voting Joe Biden in the party’s primary election. Voting “uncommitted” in the primary was a rebuke of Biden’s support for Israel’s war against Gaza and the West Bank. The campaign to vote “uncommitted” and to challenge Biden’s support for Israel has now spread to New Jersey, as well as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, crucial swing states for the general presidential election.
