The evidence you showed of this guy being some hardened anti-communist or non-communist isn't very strong.<br/><br/>Of course a person can make genuine mistakes of course, or they could also be grifters. Perhaps the later is also the case for Safronov, but I haven't seen it yet. Imported grain was of 4th and 5th grade. Since USSR had limited amount of actual arable land, the decision was made to grew high quality grain for internal consumption and just import forage grain. Socialist system is efficient but it doesn't change the climate and geography of the land and majority of USSR lands were either non arable lands or risk agriculture lands.<br/><br/>Just a bit fo a comparison. The highest grade flour sold for people in USSR was a mix of wheat of 1st and 2nd grade. In modern Russia the highest grade flour is the flour made from 50% 3rd grade and 50% 4th grade. Considerng that grain of 4th grade was used to feed livestock, you can make your own conclusion about the place fo people in capitalism system.

<strong>Perestroika did not cause USSR’s downfall but ‘a lot of things’ should have been done differently, says ex-Soviet leader Gorbachev</strong><br/><br/><a href="https://www.rt.com/russia/531136-ussr-collapse-perestroika-gorbachev/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">https://www.rt.com/russia/531136-ussr-collapse-perestroika-gorbachev/</a><br/><br/>The collapse of the Soviet Union was not caused by the controversial policy of perestroika but should actually be blamed on the attempted coup in August 1991 and a conspiracy between the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus.<br/><br/>That’s according to former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, who wrote an article for ‘Russia in Global Affairs’ explaining his point of view that perestroika was “historically correct” and necessary for the USSR.<br/><br/>Gorbachev led the Soviet Union from 1985 until its collapse in 1991 and is seen as one of the most important figures of 20th-century history. However, while he enjoys a positive reputation outside of the country, he is viewed differently inside Russia. Many people blame him for the post-Soviet economic crisis that led to a dramatic decline in living standards, as well as a diminution of Moscow’s status on the world stage.<br/><br/>Perestroika, seen by some as a significant contributing factor in the dissolution of the USSR, was an attempt to restructure the economic system and end stagnation. As part of the policy, Gorbachev introduced market-like reforms into the socialist system, which lead to food shortages and political tensions.<br/><br/>However, according to Gorbachev, those who believe perestroika wasn’t necessary have a very short memory.<br/><br/>“They have either forgotten or don’t want to remember what the moral and psychological situation in Soviet society was like by 1985,” he explained. “People were clamoring for change. Everyone – both leaders and ordinary citizens – felt that something was wrong with the country. The country was sinking deeper into stagnation. Economic growth had virtually stopped.”<br/><br/>“Perestroika was aimed at people. Its goal was to liberate a person, to make him the master of his own destiny, of his country,” he said.<br/><br/>However, despite his conviction that the policy was correct, he did note that he would have done “a lot of things differently.”<br/><br/>In Gorbachev’s opinion, the real reason for the fall of the Soviet Union was insubordination within the ranks of the Communist Party.<br/><br/>“Two blows proved fatal for perestroika,” he explained. “The attempted coup d’etat organized by reactionary forces, including those from my entourage, in August 1991, and the December collusion of the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, which ended the centuries-old history of our state.”<br/><br/>In particular, he pointed the finger at Boris Yeltsin, who was the leader of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, and who promised that a union of some sort would survive. However, according to the former Soviet leader, the heads of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus got together and opted to destroy the country.<br/><br/>“Yeltsin did not keep his word,” Gorbachev wrote. “He and his entourage sacrificed the Union to an unstoppable desire to reign in the Kremlin.” No.485931

I would also recommend Douglas Tottle's Fraud, Famine and Fascism (pdf 1) which debunks the Holodomor.
I'd recc some Russian authors, 'cause they really have top tier nuance but they don't have any English translations.
I do much suggest reading Patrick Sloans "Democracy in the Soviet Union" (1937) (pdf 2) I've talked with his son and read the book and it's a fairly nuanced view of the USSR.
Anne Louise Strong is a good writer on the USSR as Walter Duranty, despite attempts at slandering his name, has very fair conclusions about it in his reportages.

"Latin in russian" has 1-to-1 correspondence with russian letter, so A is А, B is Б, C is Ц, and so on, plus double letters like SH is Ш, CH is Ч, SHCH (or SCH, or whatever) из Щ, and so on. However, "russian latin" doesn't like C because it looks weird, so Ц is TS. Y (called "eegrek" in math for some reason) represents Й in letters Я, Ё, Е, Ю, but not Ь (soft sign, written only after consonants and representing them being soft. Consonants, except for Ч and Щ, are hard by default). So, YA is Я, YO is Ё, YE is Е, YU is Ю. Words which end in ЫЙ is on case-to-case basis, apparently. You can get either, but personally I notice it translated as YI more often than IY. IY is more consistent with other Y usage in "russian latin", but you get what you get. Ъ is hard sign, it's basically used in places where there's a pause, so, your "obyem" should be "ob'yom". Historically, hard sign was used after all the consonants, but language reform changed that and left it only with the pause function.

Balaev keeps murdering historians
https://p-balaev.livejournal.com/1432358.htmlIn short, Khrushev claims that the plan was to fight the enemy on enemy's territory immediately after attack, but instead Stalin retreated to Moscow. So, Stalin bad. And all the historians support Khrushev's claim, because of anticommunism. 20th congress Khruschev's speech is quoted, such as "in press and media there's a prevalent opinion that Stalin used active defence while retreating, that Stalin predicted everything and outplayed everyone", and so on. Meanwhile:
> А теперь кое-что из резолюции по пятилетнему плану развития народного хозяйства СССР, принятого на последнем предвоенном съезде партии:>«Обеспечить должный контроль за выполнением решений ЦК ВКП(б) и СНК СССР о запрещении строительства новых предприятий в Москве и Ленинграде, а также распространить это постановление на Киев, Харьков, Ростов-на-Дону, Горький, Свердловск, в которых впредь запретить строительство новых предприятий.Last pre-war 5 year plan literally forbade building any new factories in Moscow, Leningrad, Ukraine, Russia's south.

Hey bros, found a crashcourse article into a debunk of the most common economic myths about Stalin and Khruschev
http://proriv.ru/articles.shtml/ogienko?vs_safronov It's a debunking of Safronov's "expertise" in economics, but it goes over everything.
I had no clue that according to khruschevite economists, self-costs of producing grain increased from 22 roubles in 1933 to 63 roubles in 1953. Holy shit, apparently, implementing tractors and fertilizers, reducing the amount of manual labor, number of workers, increases costs of production of grain!

I have a question related to a term that has appeared several times and often in negative connotation, but I am not sure what it means: "Cost Accounting"
An ordinary english meaning for these terms would just be taking the various costs to produce a given product (raw materials, depreciation of equipment, wages, etc.) and adding them up (potential dividing by output to get a cost per unit).
Obviously this in and of itself is just a very basic administrative procedure, so in Russian the term must mean something else so that it is often claim antagonistic to planning.
Can anyone help clarify?

>>486127Khozraschyot? That's what khruschevites' economic policies were called. While by itself it's a normal thing - we want factories to optimize their production, so that they don't rely on other factories to cover for them, obviously, you need to understand when such an approach is applicable - for khruschevites it was a way to increase factories' autonomy and hide their anticommunist policies under communist-sounding slogans. Article argues that USSR shouldn't have moved away from subsidizing unprofitable base industries with the profits from end consumer industries, while reality (mainly, China) shows that development of consumer products requires making those base factories solvent via their own means.
Again, it all heavily depends on the situation, and again, khruschevites gutted those policies of all the intended meaning and replaced them with capitalist road. It's a proof that you can't create or support socialism by economic means alone, you can't evade class struggle with economic tricks.

Aside, I think when it comes to subsidies it would be good for a socialist country to always aim to make them explicitly part of the state budget for ease of tracking. No borrowing loans with negative real interest rates, no hidden cross subsidies between industries, no retained significant profit for discretionary use. That way all subsidies can be more easily openly debated.

How the hell would costs of production of grain increase threefold while implementing automation? Even if we assume that recent war and NATO stand-off created policies to rip-off kolkhozniks with pricing, how in the world would that increase costs of production? Khruschevites most likely counted kolkhozniks' increase in wages and living standards as an increase in costs of production of grain, that's the only non-retarded explanation I can think of. And if so, just think about it: khruschevites/revisionists/antistalinists considered an increase in peasants' living standards detrimental to the economy, because of kolkhozniks taking out of the "pool" more goods, thus increasing costs of grain production. Just think about it. Makes sense for them to want to nationalize away kolkhozes' property and make them compliant, eh? It's the kind of thing capitalists would talk about behind the closed doors, to extract maximum profits from the workers. Contrast that with Malenkov's proposed policy to increase state's buying prices for meat and such to promote meat production - by khruschevites' logic that would have increased cost of production of meat through the roof.

>>486150>>486151>shortage is CAUSED by people having too much moneyYes, and this is so easy to demonstrate I'm impressed you're trying to argue against it. Why?
Let's say minimum wage rises to $100 USD/hour in a western country but the government also price controls stuff like meat and bread to stay at the same price. What does this mean? It means that everyone can now afford 9x more meat/eggs/food/etc. than they ""used"" to be able to, assuming they spent it all on meat.
HOWEVER, food production (as well as production of any other good you want to price control) has not been correspondingly increased to match this sudden surge in demand. Not to mention that most price controls suck because they are pinned at prices below break-even points, meaning there is inefficiency and the state is losing money that could be spent on more important things because they're subsidizing it so heavily.
Hence shortages. Hence why Soviet Union suffered with shortages. Hence why people like Khrushchev were doing dumb shit like the Virgin Islands campaign to increase agricultural productivity, since too many people had too much money to spend and stuff was out of stock not always but on a consistent enough basis to generate low level frustration.
>Yes, I fucking hate it when instead of increasing in price as times go on, goods decrease in price. It makes me super angry.<Being this economically illiterate Deflation is bad for economies overall. You hold the same position as a lunatic libertarian Bitcoin booster.
If holding money becomes more valuable over time that means that the incentive to invest in future production drops to zero since you can earn more money by doing nothing as the prices of things are constantly decreasing relative to the (constantly increasing) value of your money. Deflation is what was killing national economies and causing spikes of unemployment with the Gold Standard forcing deflation on everyone, until people like Keynes came around. This is why some sections of the Bourgeoisie (the libertarains) want to go back to the Gold Standard, because it means that they can go back to putting everything in their savings account and gaining millions every year without even doing anything (since you can, contrary to popular opinion, lose money on stock investments).
>Decrease in prices is the fucking reason why China outcompetes the West.Decrease in prices is only RELATIVE TO THE HIGHER COSTS OF EVERYTHING IN THE WESTERN COUNTRIES. Holy shit. If you were born in China and raised and grew up there you would see visible inflation (not much, around 2% inflation annually like a developed Western country, but it's there) because your incomes would be based in Yuan and not USD you utter incompetent. >Hence why people like Khrushchev were doing dumb shit like the Virgin Islands campaign to increase agricultural productivityKhurschev resulted in meat shortages, lol. Stalin set up an efficient agricultural system that had more meat produced than during Khruschev's Virgin Lands campaign and after. Under Stalin, there was no wide unrest at government policies, people didn't blockade railroads to demand "to turn Khruschev into meat".

>If holding money becomes more valuable over time that means that the incentive to invest in future production drops to zero since you can earn more money by doing nothing as the prices of things are constantly decreasing relative to the (constantly increasing) value of your money.Yes. And? That means you put your money in a bank, and bank uses that money to invest. For example. Workers LOVE seeing goods becoming cheaper, as that signifies FUCKING PROGRESS, and also it corresponds heavily with the rising level of life of workers - because they can buy more stuff with the same amount of money! With workers spending most of their money every month, anyway, because they are FUCKING WORKERS, not capitalists who have money to spare.
>>Decrease in prices is the fucking reason why China outcompetes the West.Decrease in prices is only RELATIVE TO THE HIGHER COSTS OF EVERYTHING IN THE WESTERN COUNTRIES.
No, you retard, China is specifically PLANNING TO decrease costs of goods - SOEs are tasked with that, most notably steel industries, and for example the costs of new cargo ships have decreased in China by 20% over the past 5-10 years. Which, by the way, made China the biggest ship producer in the world, with their ships being cheaper than South Korea's and Japan's ones. Consumer goods are a different story, but generally speaking costs are decreasing. Say, look at how much TV cost in 1950s, and how much it costs today (relative to average wage). China does the same process INTENTIONALLY, and that murders competition.
No.486155
>>486154>You just assumed that it didn't increase.Because agricultural productivity increasing is not based off the sole will of the planners but also reliant on complex geographical/natural limits/supply chain/trading/etc. factors that cannot be resolved simply by printing out a piece of paper that's been officially stamped and documented that orders a producer along the lines of:
<"ok increase production by 700% in next few months thanks :DDD". If you're 4 feet tall and I tell you to reach 6 feet tall naturally in the next two months is there anything you can humanly do to accomplish that goal despite me """planning""" it for you, you tard?
>So, bread costs below break-even point, ok. What does it do to the economy? It frees up workers' money to buy stuff other than bread. You STILL don't understand. The temptation for socialist governments is to subsidize the price of goods under price controls (generally food) way below the break even point meaning that their funds aka their total financial capacity and what the limits of what they can do is being wasted on keeping certain goods permanently stuck at a certain price level when they could be spending that money instead on, say, cancer research, or building a new housing complex, or building a new road.
OPPORTUNITY COST is important. Hence unreasonable price controls result in an unnecessary financial burden that diverts resources away from other important sectors since the state no longer can finance other important projects.
>Yes. No, no one smart invests in deflationary environments because sitting around and doing nothing with the money is incentivized!
Here is a rough sketch of a deflation example:
>1 unit of deflationary money will be worth 2 (in real terms) by the next - so an increase of 100% in buying power>If I start an enterprise and pay someone 5 units of money, by next year I will have lost 10 units of money through opportunity cost (5 x 2) because if I sat on it instead of paying it out to someone else I would have had 10 units worth of currency in real terms. >This means I would need to have a product or service that people would buy to give me at minimum 10 units worth before next year just to be able to reach break-even before even profit occurs - and the likelihood of that? Nil, because customers know they will be able to buy that same product for much cheaper next year! Why not wait a couple years for the currency to get even stronger before buying?>In addition, the money that I would be paid for whatever good I sell would be worth less (because at that point in time the increase in value hadn't kicked in yet) meaning that further investment into the enterprise would again be a net loss disincentivizing me from continuing. <End result: Mass unemployment, mass enterprise bankruptcy, and a destroyed or stagnant economyNow compare to inflation of 2%:
>1 unit of inflationary money will be worth 0.98 by the next>If I start an enterprise and pay someone 5 units of inflationary money, it will be worth 4.9 by the next>Since value of """dormant"""/non invested money is negative, I am incentivized to constantly grow and expand operations to make more, because leaving it in my savings or whatever is not going to give me any personal benefits>My customer base is also incentivized to spend money into the economy, since they know that there will be price rises next year thanks to inflation >Other analysts will see greater potential and invest in their enterprises, creating a positive cycle of expansion <End result: Boom times, lots of enterprises founded, fuller employment, and a growing economy. This is why deflation is retarded and KILLS, absolutely KILLS economies.
Holy shit I can't even fathom that I had to explain that. Hey genius, if cheap goods from China were such a quality of life improvement for the Western workers, why the fuck are so many of them committing suicide and languishing in poverty/unemployment/crime/etc? It's because those goods were produced through the destruction of their native industries meaning that they have suffered a net loss in their living standards through increased unemployment and decayed prospects! "Goods becoming cheaper = progress" has to be the most batshit insane neoliberal take I've ever seen on this board so far. It's not true on an economic level, it's not true on a worker level, it's not true even in terms of the environment because environmental damage not being factored in is a reason why so many goods are so cheap in today's free trade environment. Take the Scandinavian welfare states that succdems look up to - goods and services are EXPENSIVE there because wages are HIGHER and workers are more SECURE (although that is quickly changing after neolib """"reforms""").
>China is specifically PLANNING TO decrease costs of goods - SOEs are tasked with that, most notably steel industries, and for example the costs of new cargo ships have decreased in China by 20% over the past 5-10 years. China does the same process INTENTIONALLY, and that murders competition.Yes of COURSE companies want to out-compete their rivals and push cheaper products. This is a natural function of capitalism. But the Chinese are not aiming for a DEFLATIONARY ECONOMY hence why inflation still exists in China and China's Central Bank still prints money. You can buy less food on the same salary in China today than you could 10 years ago because China's central planners are wise and know that inflation is necessary to grow the economy and that wasteful perma-stuck price controls aren't the way forward. They learnt from the Soviet experience.
>muh cheaper TVsFuck you're falling for all the neoliberal memes today I guess. If your wage has remained stagnant for the last 20-30 years as so many workers in the West have; how the FUCK is that a net benefit? You think a boomer who raised their entire family on a single salary trade union job, paid off mortgage, has two cars and money to go on vacation and everything, had a harder time than some fucking zoomer living paycheque to paycheque in a cramped 200ft sq ft apartment eating frozen dinners? However by the seventies productivity growth slowed and the USSR implicit subsidies for consumer goods of various kinds rose leading to occasional particular shortages and arbitrary consumption inequalities. This then explodes with perestroika because of the coops buying state goods and reselling them as well as the abolition of the state monopoly on foreign trade.

It's more akin to giving a priority to things than spending resources. You spend resources on producing goods, not on buying them when they are already produced. What the fuck are you even going on about? If bread is cheap via subsidies, it's cheap due to basically making other goods costlier. It doesn't decrease overall amount of goods produced DIRECTLY, in can decrease it via making labor more scarce in some industry, because all the laborers went to other job, but OVERALL? Subsidizing expanded production of bread will create, paradoxically enough, more bread, and cheaper at that, though. While that other poster argued that subsidies mean "lol let the state buy that for you", in reality it's more often along the lines of the state directly expanding production, thus distorting the free market, thus it's haram even to think about that. Mannerheim said that finns lost the Winter War because: first, there was too little snow; second, it was the coldest winter in 112 years! 112 years! Fucking fuck, literally the same thing that loser nazis use to cope with. And from Mannerheim himself, no less! The history of WW2 was written by FUCKNG LOSERS.

But there's irony to this.
https://1957anti.ru/publications/item/1969-kak-panfilovtsy-polovinu-moskovskoj-oblasti-sozhgli-prikaz-stavki-vgk-042817th of November. Is it winter in Russia? Yet the order claims that "last month has shown that hitlerites can't fight in winter".
Order also claims that germans were stopped already in 17th of November. You know, despite them advancing 4 km per day.
So, order "orders" to create 20-30 men large "hunter groups" to raid behind enemy lines and burn villages. Isayev, who was apparently the first one to bring up this archival document, tried to prove the existance of that order by showing us reports of 8-10 men large groups not coming back from the raids.
Also, archives claim that Panfilov's division destroyed 50 villages - at the time when they were fighting in defensive battles against germans. I'm goddamn certain that the 50 villages burnt were proven deeds of nazis, until those documents were found in sacred archives to prove otherwise.
Oh, and military journals (shown in the article) of armies of Western Front don't mention that order getting fulfilled ever. They mention partisans in group of 300 people raiding a factory germans used as housing and killing 500 of them while suffering only 8 losses, however.
