I know I recommended it a few times in the last thread, but if you live in the USA then locum tenens X-ray/CT/MRI is good six-figure jobs you can get with nothing more than a two-year degree in radiography at an ARRT-accredited community college.
Pros:
>work 13 to 52 weeks at a time, extending your contract if they like you and you want to stay
>make between $1800 and $3500 per week after taxes (as of right now), depending on your specialization, contract and what state you go to (X-ray pays least, CT pays most, MRI is in the middle)
>$1000 or more of your weekly pay is a tax-free stipend for paying for housing, food, etc and doesn't count as income, so you stay in a lower tax bracket than your pay would suggest
>if you hate a place you're only there 3 months and then you leave
>if you budget properly you can work one or two contracts and then take months off of work and do whatever
>Speedrun getting good at your specialization of choice as literally every hospital has different protocols and procedures
Cons
>Have to be able to pass a drug test
>Have to be okay with being away from home for months at a time
>Can be difficult or impossible if you have a wife, kids, or a dog and want to take them with you

tech market is rough right now, you have lots of layoffs including people with years of experience. New grads sending hundreds of applications and getting no response. People will tell you to grind LC, make github projects and keep applying. Thats a good idea but if you're unemployed after months and still desperate then try this:
If you can't get a job after like 1k applications you need to apply to WITCH and sub-WITCH tier firms. they take practically anyone.
WITCH = Wipro, Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra, and HCL aka "indian outsourcing body shops". They suck but its a job and in tech. I'd say out of those Infosys is arguably the best. Low paid and shitty IT consulting work. But its a job and "tech" experience on the resume.
Sub-Witch = Even shittier than WITCH. Revature, FDM Group, etc. These will essentially make you an indentured servant for 1-2 years and pay you like $45k to live in NYC or other major cities. But it is a tech job and it usually converts at the end of the contract into a full time job at the company in question. They give you training in some tech and then bait and switch you into a low level IT support position which you can't get out of contractually anyway (otherwise you'll be forced to pay an obscene fee more than a years salary). If you have enough savings and mental stability to grind it out though they literally take almost anyone. Out of these FDM is probably the better one since they have ex-professors and other people with phds teach the training material. You will be forced to relocate. If you're lucky with revature your contract will be sold to infosys or similar company before two years, (sometimes right after training), breaking you out of it early.
anyone can have a "job" in tech but it will be a shit sandwich to eat in the short term pay wise, on tier with guys who work at best buy, but once you have experience on the resume recruiters look on you alot more favorably.

No wonder so many of them keep fishing for experienced devs to take on the heavier stuff. What an economy.

Most game developers are on a contract anyways (i.e. the game is almost done, half the workforce is furloughed, game is done, more workers are furloughed, game support ends, the rest of the team is furloughed, another game is planned, the developers are hired back).
If you can contract for yourself as opposed to some company like ACE developers INC you will get paid more. If you can develop your own games on the side you can do pretty good, and avoid corporate culture invasion of your life. No.1601091
>>1601035Creative skills. Depends on the medium you want to work (pixel game, 3D game, platformer), but you might want to learn how to use computer paint or sculpting tools. Suggest AESPRITE, Blender, and Gimp. Then obviously you need a game development platform. For someone who is small time or working alone you could risk Unity. It seems like they have a $200k threshold before they start asking for fees. So basically, if you're only doing 6,000 sales per game you probably won't have to pay for it. You could also use open source GODOT or Unreal. In any event you'll need to learn a programming language which depends on the environment (Unity -> C#, Unreal -> C++, GODOT -> C++, C# and GDscript + Open Source so can integrate Python). Finally, discipline. You need to work a couple hours a day autonomously without being whipped by a boss. You could do it in your spare time to start, but you still need discipline to watch a few YouTube videos on a programming language. Don't go too crazy on learning the programming language first, because you'll have plenty of problems to solve which will help you learn as you develop the game. Watch enough videos to learn how to use types, loops and conditions. Then google to overcome problems as you go. You really don't need a $70,000 college degree to learn how to program enough to create games unless you struggle to self-teach.

We're already at a stage where AI dev is becoming more accessible through frameworks like LangChain, and it is becoming more so as we speak . There's a lot of demand for these new libraries and skills. Notably, AI dev also threads the needle of avoiding getting automated away, since models are time lagged and only trained on data that predates the AI boom . Furthermore, AI scraping has caused a reaction in the programming world where people are being more cautious about openly sharing pertinent training data on the web , meaning that old fashioned human brain skills will drive development .
While it used to be rocket science AI development is becoming more "lego blocky" and more accessible to workaday programmers. Of course, it might turn out to be a fad and you run the risk of learning all kinds of skills only to enter a deflating market , but you're forced to do that no matter what choice you make since this is capitalism and you are disposable by design.

We live in a class based society that wants wage slaves living at a subsistence wage, who ideally believe the ruling ideology that if they work harder they will succeed more. Personally i am skeptical of encouraging 'work' like this at all, i was a labourer, my family are all tradespeople so from my POV why work? Yes i would have more money but i would have no time or mental health to spend it, i can see with everyone around me that they get to old age and their bodies are wrecked through work injuries and through the ravages of time and hard labour. For many obvious reasons work cannot always be avoided but I think anyone on the left should be disdainful of work and suspicious of anyone trying to push the glory and so on of working.

Most academic comp sci departments have their heads up their asses, and those professors are teaching students to become professors. Academia is sequestered from the market in many ways, and tends to function in a self-reproducing way in which academics seek to beget academics.

Reality is that cooking seems like a hard gig and the general rule is that shittier jobs get shitter pay. It doesn’t matter how much propaganda is pushed out by industry leaders here, there’s just too many corporations shutting down and people abandoning working here completely because it doesn’t pay and asks too much from employees. Shit fuels a cycle of resignation where more people leave, other have to pick up the work and get stressed to shit and force more people to leave.
Wouldn’t even be so bad if any of these companies would bother paying out the ass for things like automats, self checkouts and other forms of self servicing machines for more roles in these places. Too bad that shits expensive because of maintenance and installation costs, stacked on top of the fact that it’s easier to hire impoverished migrants than it is to put a machine that could break down or be misused by consumers at any time

Not to mention that selling fast food slop is just as poisonous to people as "slanging dope". Workaholism is so fucking trashy. Like what’s pulling double digit hours contributing to? Unless your a genuine industrial worker building infrastructure or manufacturing shit, there’s a very real and very clear point in any shift where working more hours isn’t actually producing or providing any services or goods to anyone. You’re just on site for a few more hours and I have the experience to say that I’m correct. Fucking economy here is ruthless, tuition fees thousands upfront so that’s where nearly all my income goes to, if I had to work the full 40 plus overtime I wouldn’t be able to eat anything anyways because of the cost of living plus that my parents ph for, which is crazy to think about because I don’t spend money I get on anything I don’t need like entertainment or hobbies. And god forbid I had to move out I would get smoked instantly by rent prices and having to pay for food, car ownership, and the probably dozen other multi thousand expenditures this dumbass country requires its citizens to blow on just to live a “normal” existence only to have to do things like give up on seeking education, hobbies or relationships purely if it means coming home everyday knowing I can live for the rest of the month.

>The two-year Master’s programme "Global Political Economy and Development" is a research-oriented graduate programme that leads to the degree of Master of Arts in Global Political Economy and Development. It introduces students to the institutions, actors and processes characterising globalised capitalism, North-South relations and development cooperation. It focuses on the global level, but it also looks at regional and national settings from a comparative perspective. Our curriculum stands out because it approaches political economy from a North-South perspective that is informed by development theory and practice and postcolonial perspectives
>Following topics are covered in the program:>Labour in the Global Economy, Politics of Money, Debt and Finance, Issues of Post-Colonial Political Economy, Gender and Race in Globalisation, Global Governance and Development Cooperation, Global Political Ecology, Sustainability and Environmental Politics, European Integration and Migration Policy, Urbanization and Agrarian Studies, Postcolonial, Decolonial and Postdevelopment Theory, State, Civil Society and Social Struggles.https://www.uni-kassel.de/uni/studium/global-political-economy-and-development-master/program-structure No.1684287

I recently got laid off from a sweet software engineering job at a startup (yes I know) . I gave my all to this company , and it wasn't even that my all wasn't enough. I was foolish enough to think that this company was somehow different . Literally what happened is that an investor bought them out and negotiated controlling terms over the company, and I didn't figure into this anonymous alien interloper's schemes so I was to be laid off so that they could hire who the investor wanted to be hired.
Here is a critical example of the alienation of labor. It's not the first time, (I experience it all the time) but the most poignant time I experienced the reality of this concept.
All of this happened within the backdrop of the development of the commercial mainstreaming of AI as the latest tool of capitalist alienation .
All this did was solidify my understanding of the unredeemable qualities of the capitalist system , and reinforce my resolve to speak to its evils until my dying breath.
I've also decided that I am going to pursue my true calling as a writer and theoretician without regard for cash value. I'm done with the market system as a whole and if this means I have to accept a more ascetic lifestyle then so be it.
(And before those of you of a more primitive disposition would label me a "labor aristocrat", my working class credits are irrefutable. CS bros, I'm asking for your advice. I want to stop being poor ASAP so I can provide for my family (progressively worsening health issues) and, hopefully, simultaneously start a family of my own. To accomplish it all, I need to get into a higher paying job within the next year or two (around $50k or higher, or about 125 to 130% of the minimum wage here) and in about 5 to 6 years from now, I would need a salary approaching or exceeding six figures (or rather the equivalent thereof, for my area's future cost of living). Computer science is where the big bucks are and, for better or worse, I currently live around a major tech hub. However I'm pretty behind in math, approaching tech without preexisting IT knowledge/skills of any significance (I do data collection/entry and some tech-y odd jobs but any idiot with a computer could do them), and do not (currently) have a passion for the field. I'd essentially be starting from scratch while working full-time.
Do you think it's advisable for me to pursue IT? If not, what else do you suggest? Physically demanding jobs like Alaskan crab fishing aren't an option, unfortunately.
My current plan is to get a CompTIA A+ certificate, and possibly Network+, Security+, and/or CCNA certificates as quickly as possible and try to use that to break into a job that pays over $50k.
From there, my next steps are to catch up on math, rack up cheap, easy college credits online, and then transfer into Western Governors University (self-paced, regionally accredited, non-profit, online school) and graduate with a Bachelor's in computer science. Hopefully I could keep job-hopping for better pay or get internships with equivalent pay while I work through the curriculum. It's not hard math, but between working 40 hours a week and dedicating about 20 hours weekly to IT studies, if I worked like a dog, I think I could get the degree around summer 2029 give or take. And soon after that, I'd hopefully land a six figure salary to support two or three dependents. One downside of the online school is you don't get a real GPA, any passing score is automatically a 3.0 and cannot be changed, so I can't put that on a resume or be recruited for an internship from a college campus. Anyway.
Is this a realistic game plan in terms of financial and academic expectations? I think I'm a fairly bright person but I've spent most of my life cultivating a humanities-oriented intelligence rather than a STEM one, never really learned study skills, and I lack self-discipline. Feedback, insight, suggestions, anything you have to say, I will sincerely appreciate it. Thanks for reading.

>>1700190first of all, im pretty sure WGU offers classes which correspond to certifications so if you're thinking of going this route you may as well try and get in to a school like that right away. Do the certs concurrently with the degree as the subject matter overlaps.
First off you have to decide whether you are going into IT operations or software development. Computer Science and Software Engineering degrees are for programming development. Information Technology and related are for IT operations. People with a CS degree can also do operations but typically dev is the default path. Since you mentioned certs you may be interested in operations rather than dev. Certs are worthless for programmers and are more for IT ops knowledge.
WGU and similar schools actually have pretty gimped math requirements compared with alot of places where CS is combined with the electrical engineering or math department and a CS degree is essentially engineering-lite or applied math-lite.
If you can't hack the math i.e. calculus then go for the IT degree over comp sci, as it typically requires less math, usually algebra and very basic stats, something anyone with a high school education can do if motivated. I've heard that WGU also has a cloud computing degree however this is a little more newfangled and employers may not recognize it on a resume while an IT or CS degree is a fairly known quantity.
>I lack self-disciplinethis is your biggest problem as getting a technical degree is tough under the best of circumstances as a full time student, not to mention you are working full time. You need to master time management if you're actually gonna pull this off, i.e. severely limit shitposting, video games, tv etc. to like half an hour a day max. You certainly can do this but only with improving your mental focus and self discipline.
>break into a job that pays over $50k.>if I worked like a dog, I think I could get the degree around summer 2029 give or take. And soon after that, I'd hopefully land a six figure salary to support two or three dependents. Now for the pay. Getting over $50k is realistic. However getting a >100k per year job right after graduation is not unless you live in an extremely high COL area like san fransisco/palo alto, nyc, etc. Usually people start somewhere between 60k-90k right out of college, and it usually takes them 2-5 years to build up enough experience to be making 100k+. If you somehow get an IT job while also doing college and therefore have like 3-4 years of experience with a degree then maybe this is realistic. Reddit is full of stories of le bootcamp grad getting 300k at google easy but these are the extreme extreme exception not the rule, same as the average university dropout doesn't become a billionaire like gates or zuck.
Keep in mind the tech industry is in a recession right now and there are hundreds of thousands of people with experience and degrees NOW who are out of work, so not exactly the best time to break in. However, it is still possible, you may need to apply your ass off though.
So TLDR yes you can do it but it wont be easy and you have to be mentally prepared for that going in.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/asian-names-less-likely-to-get-job-anglo_n_5890bfa2e4b0c90eff00529a)? The wild part is that it only covers the initial resume and callback. If we take into account the prejudice that could exist at each of the many stages of the hiring process, the disadvantages could compound and end up being absolutely massive at the end, like the real disadvantage could leave minorities at a tiny fraction of the chance of being hired overall compared to white people with the same qualifications. There's also the implicit understanding that many professions, especially the trades, are completely off limits to anyone but white men, in that anyone else would endure not only discrimination in hiring, but brutal bullying that eventually pushes them out. How the fuck is it actually possible to navigate this? Just move away if possible?

So some of those people are just gonna have to get sacrificed to mammon. liberal aspirationalism tells you that if you just check all the right boxes and do the right things and act as a civil, chivalrous, polite little court jester for the ruling class, you're gonna make it. But the truth is there's only so many of that kind of person needed. Unless you win a contest of asskissing in a sea of asskissers, you get kicked back out onto the "job market" for having the bad luck of following the market trends 0.1 seconds too late.It is true that there was a fad that promoted the idea that everyone should "learn to code." I remember being exposed to similar propaganda when I was a teenager. One of the incredible arguments from the likes of Obama, Zuckerberg, Jack, etc., was that learning to code would become equally as important as learning to read. Such arguments were absolutely ridiculous and it is a shame that so many people fell for them, but also, can you blame people for wanting to believe that a career in software development or another computer science related field could be the path to a stable life, a white picket fence, etc? In my time studying Computer Information Systems (which at my university was an umbrella kind of program that covered all of the computing sciences), I had discovered that many of the people there were the sort who might have otherwise tried becoming doctors or lawyers had they been born 2 or 3 decades before. We should not be inclined to blame the victims for their own oppression.
>But the truth is there's only so many of that kind of person needed. The highly "competitive" nature of the labor market in general, and specifically this sector of the labor market, is less informed by the socially necessary number of workers required to fill positions and more to do with the rate of profitability. Capital maintains a reserve army of labor – a reserve army of the unemployed – by way of intentionally creating scarcity of jobs. This is, of course in the case of compsci, greatly exacerbated by the problem of software engineers (or what have you) being leveraged in such a capacity where their labor activity creates the conditions whereby they become unemployable due to themselves becoming deskilled as a result of "advances" or "innovations" in "technology" or "workplace processes." The advance of technology cannot be separated from production, it is in-fact contingent on production, as technology is a necessary factor of production, and its development is contingent on factors of production, which is motivated by the desire to increase acquisition of surplus value (profit). Failing my studies again, despite having been a good high school student. Late twenties. No work experience apart from dead-end shit jobs. Parents getting older. 25k in debt in an high-interest rate climate. It's unironically over now.

After years of NEETdom, got a decently cushy job as a teacher, making about 55k in a not particularly high COL area. That said, I want to start making a difference politically but no groups are around me except Democratic party crap. I'm trying to get a foothold in my union, which is awful with leadership full of Trump fans, but I didn't have enough support to win an election this year. They decided to hold elections literally one week after I started and no one knew who I was. Any politically active comrades in here with suggestions of what to do in the meantime while I bide my time for next year's eleciton?

So I spent my early twenties crashing in and out of academia due to various family issues, mental problems, neetdom and financial issues etc, however in my late twenties I pulled through, I went back to school and graduated with a good stem degree.
However I am quite concerned with my cv that features these multi year gaps in my early twenties were I alternated between studying something else or neetdom.
What's the best way to lie about them? I taught myself a few foreign languages on my own to fluency what I should have recognized as my true passion earlier maybe. Should I just make up a story about how I lived abroad during these years or how to go about this?

Fuck bros I might get laid off tomorrow. Im a nervous wreck right now. The ceo sent an e-mail saying they want to review the timesheets I submitted. They might be trying to stiff me and lay me off. Fuck man I have bills to pay, this is a horrible time.
I was working as a contractor and pretty sure they misclassified me since they were the ones assigning me work. If I get laid off I wont be eligible for unemployment as a contractor, so I'm going to go file with the DOL that I was misclassified so I can get unemployment and the backwages they owe me if they try to stiff me.
What are the do's and don'ts for my meeting tomorrow, they're going to want to question the hours I turned in and grill me. Should I give them specific details, or deflect?

You don't really have to interview that well if you're in IT and wiling to take a job without great pay. Even if you can't get an IT job there's infinite jobs in retail to tide you over a while.

If you can actually program you will find a developer position eventually. It will be a lot of work applying and interviewing. If you can't, I still have good news. Your degree will also open doors for an IT career, which is generally easier to get into and more stable. Instead of whining on image boards you should be writing cover letters and making connections with your peers. I hate that your post reminded me I was like this right before I graduated. I like science and I like maths but I am actually living in a country that has a few cool economics and politics departments that aren't completely neoliberalized. Been reading course decriptions and requirements of master programs for the past 2 hours, as well as biographies of research assistents working there, imagining how my life would have been different. On the other hand I can't see myself just writing essays and papers all day that no one will read and not building shit. Thinking of pivoting to Data analytics/engineering/econometrics or something related at least. No idea what to do.
