I think Iran was probably counting on Israeli (and U.S.) air defenses to shoot down so many of the drones that the result is effectively de-escalatory. Iran releasing a statement right before they launched them that "we've launched missiles and you're gonna get it!!" but they considered the incident closed supports that theory. We have to wait and see if Israel feels compelled to respond in kind to an attack that, while massive in scope, ended up not doing very much damage. Of course, with Israel, when has that stopped them from a disproportionate response

Reminds me of Iran's retaliation after Trump had us assassinate Soleimani. Iran bombed a U.S. base in Iraq, but in a way that had minimal casualties and was effectively a de-escalation that they could use to say that they responded forcefully.

I got plenty of grief for a comment I made a few days ago that "no one likes a traitor" and was met with people huffing that, from a certain point of view, John Brown or the Founding Fathers or what have you were all traitors. I got pushback for countering "America hate" with a quote from Lenin where he openly said he doesn't hate Russia, just the government that's repressing its people. Absolutely no one knew what I was talking about and some claimed I was trying to argue some "American patriotism is progressive" thing.

The point I was making then, was that you've got to at least want to help people in your immediate surroundings. When I said "no one likes a traitor" I meant less John Brown and more Benedict Arnold or Wang Jingwei; men who give the appearance of selling their people out for personal advancement. I was met with a lot of "Well the Proletariat has no nation" but there's a world of difference between saying "The Russian Empire is bad" (as in, the Tsarist feudal state most Russians labored under) and saying "Russia" (a nation extending from the peasants to the Tsar) is bad.

It's something that really shouldn't have to be explained, but there's a curious quality of intelligent people where they can get so enmeshed in theory and highbrow subjects that they lose sight of what's common. Not a single working man in America thinks "Fuck America" doesn't apply to them, beyond maybe the people chanting it. You spend something like 50 hours a week, maybe more, working for some asshole while another asshole groans "Uuugh, America suuuuuucks."

You aren't going to bully most people into giving up their nationality. It's a hell of a lot different than convincing them the guy in charge is a fucking inbred fuck. I'm drunk again. Sorry.
